How & Why More People are Going Self-Employed

There has been a sharp rise in self-employment in recent years and this now makes up about 15% of the working population. So, what has been the reason for this increase? There is no singular reason but there are a handful of possibilities why more and more people are choosing to embark on a career which puts them in control.

Freedom & Flexibility

It is thought that the freedom, flexibility and independence are the main reasons why self-employment is on the rise. When you are your own boss, you have the freedom to choose your own working schedule, the way in which you work and who you work with. This level of control and flexibility can be hard to get when you are employed and it is a huge appeal for many.

Earnings Potential

Additionally, while being self-employed has its risks and income can fluctuate, it also means that you might have greater earning potential if you are your own boss as you do not have a fixed income. In order for this to be the case, having a strong work ethic and having skills that are in demand will be crucial.

Easy to Start

Another reason that more and more people are becoming self-employed is because it is easier than ever. There are now all kinds of different areas in which you could launch a rewarding and lucrative self-employed career so people are finding that it is possible for them to be their own boss as opposed to having to find employment. There are, of course, various hurdles to jump through and you will be responsible for paying your own tax but this can be relatively straightforward once you know how and worth the effort for many people.

The Internet & Technology

The rise of the internet and technology has also played a key role. Many people can now easily work from the comfort of their own home which provides great freedom and flexibility as well as reduce the stress and cost of having to commute to work each day. One of the more common work-from-home jobs has been people setting up their own ecommerce stores. Ecommerce is an enormous industry and it can be relatively easy to set up your own online store and then use reliable couriers like Parcel2Go to ship products all from the comfort of your own home.

The rise in self-employment looks set to continue in the future because it provides such freedom and flexibility that you do not get with employment. While there certainly are risks and it is not a lifestyle or way of earning money for everyone, for many people it is an appealing way of life and there are now many different ways in which you can make a living as a self-employed individual, even working from home.
