4 Hacks to Embed EQ in the Workplace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The concept of emotional intelligence in business is increasingly relevant.<\/p>\n

A survey by OfficeTeam revealed that 95 per cent of HR managers and 99 per cent of employees<\/a> believed it was important for workers to have a high emotional quotient (EQ).<\/p>\n

And two-thirds of workers surveyed believed it was as important as IQ.<\/p>\n

EQ is put on a par with technical skills and intelligence because it\u2019s a key influence on morale and motivation \u2014 so more firms are seeking solutions to boost EQ.<\/p>\n

So here are four hacks to embed emotional intelligence in your workplace.<\/p>\n

Vote on values<\/strong><\/p>\n

When a company is well-established its organisational values can feel like they\u2019re set in stone.<\/p>\n

But if they no longer reflect the way you \u2018do things\u2019 then it\u2019s time for a change.<\/p>\n

If they\u2019re vague and ill-defined then the staff behaviours that support them will be difficult to decipher.<\/p>\n

Deciding values through a staff poll is the best way of making them feel empowered from the very start of a drive for cultural change.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how the General Medical Council decided on four simple and straightforward values<\/a> that inform everything they do.<\/p>\n

Drive change from the C-Suite<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cultural change is a top-led and bottom-fed process.<\/p>\n

And if managers don\u2019t act as role models for desired behaviours then a charge of corporate hypocrisy is valid.<\/p>\n

When managers practice what they preach, workers are inspired to follow suit \u2014 but if they don\u2019t, staff morale and motivation will suffer.<\/p>\n

So, substandard management behaviour<\/a> feeds staff cynicism \u2014 scuppering any drive for EQ from the very start.<\/p>\n

Enforce transparency<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once your values (and the behaviours that support them) are defined, they must be enforced.<\/p>\n

Your culture isn\u2019t aspirational \u2014 it\u2019s the only way of behaving rather than the ideal way of behaving.<\/p>\n

So 360 degree appraisals at all levels of your hierarchy make it easy to align values with behavioural competencies and performance.<\/p>\n

And staff members at all levels who consistently contravene values should face similar censure to those whose technical performance or attendance is in decline.<\/p>\n

Conversely, appropriate behaviour must be recognised and rewarded.<\/p>\n

A 360 system ensures staff openly report each other\u2019s attitude and behaviours \u2014 allowing rich data on culture to be collected and analysed.<\/p>\n

If managers are particularly committed to leading from the front they might also publish their own appraisals to team members.<\/p>\n

Transform HR<\/strong><\/p>\n

Enlightened HR staff should be \u2018people\u2019s champions\u2019 with a particular focus on developing staff EQ.<\/p>\n

But HR can spend much of their time undertaking important but onerous admin tasks that leave little time for focusing on soft-skills.<\/p>\n

So payroll outsourcing can free up their time to monitor, support and protect an EQ culture.<\/p>\n

Then they can be the guardians of your positive EQ culture.<\/p>\n

These four hacks should help you embed EQ in the workplace so that staff flourish and success is sustained.<\/p>\n
