• Over a third of employees don’t feel comfortable discussing mental health concerns with colleagues, employers or HR, a survey shows.

• The data, from Just Eat for Business, encourages employers to foster a safe space to discuss mental health issues for Mental Health Week (9-15th May).

• The findings also show that 1 in 5 employees wouldn’t know how to identify a colleague who was going through a stressful or difficult situation.

• Robin Dunbar – Oxford Psychologist – and Occupational Psychologist Dr Anneli Gascoyne urge employers to promote honest employee conversations.

Mental Health Week: 1 In 3 Employees Aren’t Comfortable Discussing Issues At Work
Mental Health Week: 1 In 3 Employees Aren’t Comfortable Discussing Issues At Work

Over a third of the nation’s employees don’t feel comfortable opening up about their mental health issues and concerns to anyone at work, a new survey shows.

The findings come from Just Eat for Business for Mental Health Awareness Week – which takes place between the 9th and 15th May – to encourage employers to provide a safe space for employees to discuss mental health concerns, including stress, anxiety and burnout.

Given that many of us will be impacted by mental health issues at some point in our careers, it’s concerning that a large portion feel unable to share these concerns in the workplace.

In fact, the survey found that many of us are already struggling, as of those surveyed, two fifths (44%) admit often feeling burnout due to work – described as a ‘state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by excessive stress’ (World Health Organization).

It appears that working relationships play a significant role when it comes to approachability and fostering these mental health discussions, with 40% of workers around the UK admitting that they feel that they don’t know their colleagues very well.

Given this lack of rapport, employees are highly unlikely to share their concerns with colleagues, and also may not feel comfortable going to HR or employers to ask for help.

And with 70 million work days lost each year due to mental health problems in the UK – which costs approximately £2.4 billion annually – it’s crucial that employers look to prioritise promoting constructive conversations while at work, and improving mental health.

One way for businesses to do this is to provide regular opportunities for socialisation – such as catered lunches or after-work socials – which help to foster a friendlier work atmosphere, and in turn will help employees feel more comfortable with colleagues and employers alike.

For Robin Dunbar, Psychologist at the University of Oxford, it’s vital that organisations provide opportunities for team bonding in order to promote a healthy work/life balance and sustain our mental health while in the office.

He states: “This whole process of creating a bonded community depends on engagement in various activities, one of which is eating or drinking together, and that just creates a sense of belonging at work. It has huge knock-on consequences for your health, physical health and mental well-being, by virtue of forming friendships. In addition, it fosters a sense of loyalty to the organisation.”

Dr Anneli Gascoyne, Gascoyne, Associate Professor in Occupational Psychology at Goldsmiths University, weighs in on the importance of stepping away from work in order to provide healthy breaks from stress: “When we’re feeling behind on work, or perhaps the workload pile seems endless, there can be a strong temptation not to take a break.

“But trying to maintain focus for long periods of time is also counterproductive: over time, we’re depleting our mental energy, getting more stressed, and often don’t notice that happening. By skipping lunch or breaks we’re potentially making that situation worse.”

Matt Ephgrave, Managing Director of Just Eat for Business also commented on the findings, saying: “With the last two years proving particularly stressful for many, it’s crucial that employers take the time to provide opportunities for employees to feel more valued, connected and listened-to while at work.

“And although it’s essential to establish an approachable way to raise specific concerns at work – to HR departments or employers – regularly scheduled team socials and catered lunches can be a great way to gently encourage colleagues to establish strong bonds.”

The findings are released for Mental Health Week (9-15th May), hosted annually by the Mental Health Foundation, which encourages us to focus on achieving good mental health.

Many companies, in the recovery phase post pandemic, are offering their employees to choose to work from the office, outside, or both as per their convenience. While this benefits the business to hire the best talents from across the world, this brings with itself its own share of challenges. How effective is this model for a business to ensure the productivity of its employees? How does it impact the holistic well-being of the workers within an organisation, while not being present together in a shared physical space of work?

Productivity And Wellbeing Of Employees: Hybrid Work Promises A Holistic Growth For Businesses In Future
Productivity And Wellbeing Of Employees: Hybrid Work Promises A Holistic Growth For Businesses In Future

Life was perfectly normal when employees rushed to their workplace to finish their daily goals and targets. The office spaces held immense opportunities to socialise and learn. Everyone was comfortable with this lifestyle.

And then… the pandemic happened, baffling almost every framework (and system) that the society had created in the past few centuries. The world suddenly was coerced to go remote and work.

What was a mere obligation at the beginning, gradually began a common sentiment that the acclimatising society caught up. This adaptation and the recuperation of the world from pandemic gave birth to a new way of work, the hybrid model.

In a hybrid setup, the workforce is distributed, constituted by those who work flexibly. In other words, the employees have the choice to work from an office, remotely or both. Statistically speaking, the world has embraced this model quite humbly. The productivity of a remote worker, on average, increases by 40% more than the one working onsite. Experts suggest that while it leverages the employees to experience the freedom to explore and innovate, it facilitates a trusted relationship between the management and the employees.

This means an increasing number of businesses are willing to test the waters. For those who have their teams constituted by globally distributed demographics, this is an innovative way to stay connected to showcase their productivity. What’s more? The businesses are experiencing increased efficiencies with reduced running and maintenance costs.

The question then arises: How can this model be enabled to unleash better productivity while ensuring a healthier workforce, and an efficient management system within an organisation?

“Over the past year, no area has undergone more rapid transformation than the way we work. Employee expectations are changing, and we will need to define productivity much more broadly — inclusive of collaboration, learning, and well-being to drive career advancement for every worker, including frontline and knowledge workers, as well as for new graduates and those who are in the workforce today. All this needs to be done with flexibility in when, where, and how people work.”, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft

That said, the key features that shape the future of the hybrid work model are- building an inclusive culture, appreciating the flexibility, and creating an energised sphere to ensure the overall wellbeing of the employees.

An imperative inclusion

An improved corporate culture that fosters a sense of belonging for everyone aids in embracing the diversity that is an essential part of the team. This also facilitates a clear communication channel, while ensuring a meaningful contribution to the growth of the business.

The key element, here, is to create a multi-channel pathway that focuses on the growth of the employees. Though a hybrid model is yet to be practiced quite at large to be able to find the right balance of working from home and from the office, it encourages newer ways of collaboration.

Flexible working conditions

According to a report by Accenture, 40% of workers felt they could be healthy and effective whether they were onsite or remote. Productivity and health, the report states, are correlation factors of the availability of enough resources at individual and organisational levels. These nurture the employee by eliminating the challenges pertaining to work.

Wellness, learning, and collaboration are the three dimensions of defining flexibility. Experimenting constantly to modify the conventional conditions is the only way to find the correct equilibrium for hybrid work culture. Tailoring parameters like working hours (from home and office space), investment in technological infrastructure, refurbishing the workspace (to accommodate the new conditions), supporting learning and upskilling opportunities, and many others could reap even larger benefits than anticipated. In today’s work-from-anywhere business environment, it is timely to invest in calibration management tools that untether your employees and let them manage gage data anywhere and at any time.

Re-energising work with wellness

Remote work, in collaboration with global lockdown, took a heavy toll on the energy levels and well-being of employees around the world, especially for the freshers.

Engagement protocols and policies need to be put to order that strike an appropriate balance with the unplugged hours (that provide a refreshing and quality downtime). Leadership at the organisations are responsible to ensure this equilibrium, by setting examples and nurturing a culture of holistic wellbeing within the work teams.

A sustainable recipe for a thriving work model

Though inevitable, change is never easy. A hybrid model is a certainty of our future work culture. Such transformations do need time, a huge collective effort, and an unmeasurable technological advancement. It would require the world to constantly unlearn and then re-learn new approaches and techniques to keep abreast with the transitions. Keeping the people at its core, a business can accomplish itself with policies and planning. The complete recipe for sustainable growth for businesses, sure it is.

In the latest episode of the Finding Your Atom podcast, Valentina Castellani creates a gripping narrative out of her experiences for co-hosts Amrita Sen and Dinis Guarda to throw light on the essence of a crafting process while realising life’s goals.

“Finding Your Atom” is a podcast series with a goal to find the elementary driving energy that blends with empathy and compassion to create a powerful social impact. The series is a brainchild of co-hosts Amrita Sen, artist, designer, and producer, and Dinis Guarda, author, and founder of citiesabc and openbusinesscouncil. Continuing with their ritual of bringing fresh energy to the podcast, they bring Valentina Castellani, (title) to discuss the depths of concepts like modern sainthood and embracing (and overcoming) fear on the path to achieving the goal.

Asked by Amrita about the key drivers that have been responsible for shaping Valentina’s character, she fondly replies that the process of creation is intimate, fragile, and fearsome. But it is these very virtues that paint hope on the canvas of dreams. One should never be afraid to embark on the journey, the first step to the realisation of a goal.

“I do believe that the heart and soul of a storyteller is the fact that you start a journey. Of course, there is some planning, in the sense that you know your goal, you know your arrival. But the journey is never fully planned. It comes to us. Because, if you have your core connected to the final vision, and to your heart, your emotion, your system of being, the journey gets sculpted and crafted day by day. And you have to trust the process.”, she explains.

While the episode grapples the audience with interesting anecdotes shared by Valentina, it did not skip Dinis’ notice that although we live in the most peaceful of times, the world is fighting together with the most difficult situation of pandemics. Valentina assures us that noise is going to be forever, little things would create the things back to salvation.

“Start from the little things, whether it’s the coffee in the morning, a little walk, call your best friend, take a good shower- know that that little thing ignites a better system. And from that little thing, you start again, and be willing to take the time. Pretty much everybody had those days and they can testify that those days were then gone and there were better days.”

Adding further, she says simple gestures help in overcoming the most monstrous of fears. These, Valentina and the hosts, agreed have been the very advanced thoughts that have been prevalent in times immemorial across all the cultures. Features like innate linearity and simplicity are what make their application universal and across the barriers of time.

Emphasising the importance of having a network that not only supports but is also the very reason for keeping one on their path to a goal, Valentina says “As long as the circle is open between the people of a network, that forms the base. And it needs to be respected. If that network is built, and a solid base of openness is created, it will lead to construction, and not the destruction of the project, every chapter of your life.”

Valentina also introduced a unique concept of “Modern Sainthood”. According to her, “I believe that we are all a little bit of a modern saint. We all are human beings, making a million mistakes, but they all have a cause, full of humanity, and have ethics- all human qualities to expand out of ourselves and help others. We do elevate some people, we do inspire them, and we create situations to help others out. Similarly, we surround ourselves with others who protect our vision, elevate us; and in this process, they do carry us”.

With many deeper insights and concepts being discussed in the podcast, the episode promises to take the audience on a journey that is both enduring and interesting.

Finding the core

Andrew highlights the essence of focussing on the ‘core’ that is the centre of any fitness program or regime. It is his utmost belief that realising the centre of every action is ‘self’. He insists that understanding that one’s body, mind, and spirit should be in harmony with the goals and tasks it is assigned with.

“It starts with the basic understanding of ‘What is it that I want, what is it that I treasure, what is it that I reward, and do I have the mental, physical, and spiritual conditioning to keep it?’. That’s the key to strengthening the core”, he emphasises.

The importance of recovery

The human body is programmed to heal itself, provided it is given sufficient time for the same. Andrews explains this with several examples during an hour-long session. He assures that it brings no harm to the velocity of life, and one never misses on to anything on coming to a transient period of recovery.

“If you find yourself hitting the hall, take the time out to rest. Recover. You’ll be surprised what your body can come up with by just not doing anything. It’s okay, doesn’t mean you’re missing out on anything. It doesn’t mean that you’re not doing anything. It’ doesn’t mean that you’re being lazy or procrastinating. It’s just I’m going to use wisdom this time. I’m just going to rest, relax my body. See what my body can come up with just by standing still”, Andrew stresses.

Balancing with ‘moderation’

Andrew has mastered the art of incorporating discipline, consistency, and self-control with fitness and healthcare. With a rough start at the beginning of his fitness journey, he has learnt that it is imperative to avoid extremes. Creating a balance between nutrition, work-out, and adequate rest is an inevitable step in achieving happiness, peace, and physical and mental wellbeing.

“It starts with the basics of having a foundation of what’s important for you and your life. Your health is number one. ‘Where do I start eating, thinking, and living healthy’, that’s the key. And that’s different, based upon every individual”, he insists.

Creating a relationship with the community

The hosts of the podcast and the guest himself were in consensus with the concept of getting involved in a community for wellbeing and happiness. Andrew explained that it is not only the personal level that a healthy lifestyle impacts in a positive way. It is responsible for the peace and betterment of society as a whole.

“I remind everyone, we’re here for one go, and that’s to get better. I don’t know if it’s to get better at being a better individual, a better wife, a better husband, a better family man, a better employee let’s figure out how we can get better as people. However, this journey that I’m going to take you on is a reminder that you’ll be going to have to fight in order to get there. So, if it’s joy, if it’s peace, if it’s a virtue such as self-control or discipline, we all need to support each other in regards to achieving that goal. So, let’s fight for this”.

The episode concluded on a very insightful note as Andrew enlightens “Are you taking care of yourself? Are you eating right? Are you thinking right? Are you loving right? Are you supporting right? Slow down to see where you hit. Don’t be in a rush. I try to encourage people to hone in on that. You got to slow down before you miss your stop. If you slow things down just a little bit, calm down, you’ll be surprised with the kind of revolution experience you’ve had. You’re not going to miss anything by just slowing down”.

Andrew’s achievements also include training amateur fighters as a certified USA Boxing Coach and as a group fitness boxing instructor at the Equinox Fitness Clubs in South Bay, Newport Beach, Westwood, Downtown LA, and Century City. He is also a well-respected speaker & educator for the greater Los Angeles public schools, churches, recreation centres, and community colleges.

The US, China and Japan are the world’s largest wellness economies by market size

The nonprofit Global Wellness Institute (GWI) has released “The Global Wellness Economy: Country Rankings,” the first research to measure the wellness economies of 150 nations. It’s packed with information on national wellness markets from average wellness spend per capita to the wellness market’s contribution to each nation’s overall economy. The research was presented today at the first Global Wellness News™ broadcast in New York City.

THE FULL REPORT IS HERE.
GRAPHS ARE HERE.

The report is a companion to GWI’s recently-released “The Global Wellness Economy: Looking Beyond COVID,” a complete global update on all 11 sectors of the wellness market, finding that the world wellness economy is worth $4.4 trillion and forecast to reach $7 trillion by 2025.

“This last year, the GWI generated country-level data for all 11 wellness sectors. So now, for the first time, we can answer the question everyone asks: How big is the total wellness market for each country and who ranks highest?” said Ophelia Yeung, GWI senior research fellow. “Which nations are growing, which are shrinking? How do national wellness markets differ and why? This report is the first to answer these questions.”

The Top 20 Wellness Markets

US:                     $1.2 trillion
China:               $683 billion
Japan:               $304 billion
Germany:         $224 billion
UK:                     $158 billion
France:              $133 billion
Canada:             $95 billion
South Korea:     $94 billion
Italy:                    $92 billion
Australia:            $84 billion
Brazil:                  $83 billion
India:                   $78 billion
Russia:                $71 billion
Spain:                  $63 billion
Mexico:                $46 billion
Netherlands:      $41 billion
Taiwan:                $38 billion
Switzerland:        $38 billion
Indonesia:           $36 billion
Turkey:                $35 billion

It’s no surprise the world’s most populous countries (e.g., China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Russia), or the wealthiest (e.g., Switzerland, Australia, Netherlands), or countries that combine size with wealth (e.g., the US, Japan, Germany, the UK, etc.), spend the most on wellness.

The US is by far the largest market, at $1.2 trillion–nearly double the size of the second-largest market, China, at $683 billion. In fact, the US accounts for 28% of the entire global wellness market, while the top ten markets represent 71% of the world total.

The report provides granular data on national wellness markets, from growth rates in the pre-pandemic years of 2017-2019 to how the pandemic has impacted each market.

Where Do Consumers Spend the Most on Wellness? (Wellness Spending Per Capita)

Switzerland:     $4,372
Iceland:             $3,728
US:                      $3,685
Austria:              $3,568
Norway:             $3,346
Australia:            $3,771
New Zealand:    $2,969
Denmark:           $2,958
Hong Kong:       $2,943
Aruba:                 $2,792

Consumers in the very wealthiest economies spend the most each year on wellness. The report provides data on how much the wellness market contributes to national GDP (what percentage of the economy it represents). Globally, the wellness economy represents 5.1% of total GDP, roughly 1 in every 20 “dollars” spent by consumers worldwide is on wellness.

For Small, Tourism-Dependent Countries, Wellness Is an Outsized Percentage of Their Economy

It may seem surprising to see Aruba rank in the top 10 for consumer spend on wellness, as it’s not as wealthy as the other ranked countries. This is the tourism effect, where high-spending inbound wellness tourists represent a disproportionate part of the wellness market. The report ranks countries by the ratio of the size of their wellness economy to the size of their total GDP/economy, and the small, tourism-dependent countries really stand out. For those top five nations, the wellness market represents an eye-opening percentage of total GDP: Seychelles (16.5%), Maldives (14.5%), Aruba (11.9%), Costa Rica (11.4%), and St. Lucia (10%). This is a window into the powerful contribution that wellness tourism brings to their economies, but also shows how in these small countries wellness is more of an “export industry” and for the most part out of reach of locals.

The Sectors That Define National Wellness Markets Vary Dramatically

The report reveals how different wellness sectors dominate in different nations. Both worldwide and in most countries, the wellness market is concentrated in three sectors: 1) healthy eating, nutrition, and weight loss; 2) personal care and beauty; and 3) physical activity. These three segments account for more than 60% of the total wellness market.

There is however a wide national and regional variance. In Japan, personal care/beauty represents a much bigger share of wellness spending than in most countries; for China, India, Indonesia, Russia, and Turkey, it’s traditional/complementary medicine; in Germany, it’s wellness tourism, spas and thermal/mineral springs; while in Sub-Saharan Africa, public health and prevention spending dominates.

“These new rankings reveal the countries that spend the most on wellness–important information for governments and businesses. But the size of a wellness market does not necessarily capture which countries are most ‘well’: which nations have the best health outcomes or fair access to wellness,” said Katherine Johnston, GWI senior research fellow. “There’s much research to do. Who is benefitting from the growth of the wellness economy in each country, and who is not? What’s the relationship between the wellness market and the health and well-being of a nation’s population? What can governments and policymakers do to bring more wellness to more people? This will be the focus of our November 2022 report on wellness and policy to be released at the Global Wellness Summit in Tel Aviv.”

About the Global Wellness Institute: The Global Wellness Institute (GWI), a nonprofit 501(c)(3), is considered the leading global research and educational resource for the global wellness industry and is known for introducing major industry initiatives that bring together leaders to chart the future. GWI positively impacts global health and wellness by educating public institutions, businesses and individuals on how they can work to prevent disease, reduce stress and enhance the overall quality of life. • Embark on an exploration with co-hosts Amrita Sen and Dinis Guarda, where every episode of Finding Your Atom commits to poke the dynamic boundaries of the most basic principles of humanity, and master the practice of discovering your own ‘Personal Atomic Identifier’.

• The podcast was conceived by the creators of the “Music For” YouTube Podcast series to create a sphere for self-reflection, unearthing the journey of finding sustained happiness and, ultimately, world peace.

•  New episodes are released every Friday on the Dinis Guarda YouTube channel, with serial entrepreneur Steven Husak, Hollywood designer Mark Zunino, and leadership coach Katie Lockwood being the first guests.

The podcast series “Finding Your Atom” is a brainchild concept of co-hosts Amrita Sen: creator, artist, designer, singer and producer; and Dinis Guarda: author and founder of citiesabc, openbusinesscouncil, fashionabc and LynKey after the success of their previous podcast series “Music For”.  ‘Finding Your Atom’ is centred with the primary idea of recognising unique identifiers, thereby creating a hook that motivates the audience towards path-breaking concepts of mindfulness, sustained happiness, and world peace. The podcast is available on the Amrita Sen Youtube Podcast and Dinis Guarda YouTube channels and distributed in all other major podcast directories.

Bringing the expertise of their unique guest at every fresh episode of the podcast, the presenters peel through the layers of success and reveal their constantly battling energies. With every enthralling episode, the podcast divulges the heroic journey of negating the cacophony of needless thoughts in life and redirecting oneself to finding the fundamental ‘particle’ of happiness and peace.

Amrita Sen And Dinis Guarda Create Mindfulness And Rediscover Self At “Finding Your Atom” Podcast

Amrita and Dinis, who had already created their own podcast space with “Music For”, together embarked on the journey of meditation and wellbeing with music. With their new podcast, they benchmark the principles and practices that are congruently responsible for making the world a healthier and happier place to thrive for our generations.

Being a reservoir of knowledge and deep thoughts, Amrita has had her share of experiences through an unruly path of turmoil. It is her firm belief that identifying yourself at the most basic of levels is half the battle won.

“Let’s shrink down. What are you good at, at the most atomic of levels? Once we think about that, it becomes very clear every person has a thing. There are about 7 billion people in the world. It seems less likely that even five of them are identical. It’s impossible. There are billions and billions of stars in the universe, they have their own unique formation identifiers. Then, why is it so hard to believe that every soul in the world, including mine or my mom’s (who is in heaven now), has a unique identifier? I want to challenge everybody: what is your atomic level identifier? What is really the essence where you have something to say? What is it that only you can say? We will have to shrink it to that level”, Amrita explains excitedly.

At the premiering episode of the podcast, Steven Husak, a successful entrepreneur, reveals his journey of exploration of his own ‘Atom’. He gradually unveils the challenges he faced in his business, evolving his strategies over time based on various parameters. He also shares his experiences during the journey and the ways in which he has embraced the digital frameshift in the entire industry.

“Neil Armstrong had some fears when he stepped on the moon, and we are not anything even close to that. That’s it, don’t be afraid to take chances, go with it. Even if nobody trusts you, go with your dream”, he reassuringly reveals in the end.

Dinis Guarda, co-host of the podcast shares, “Looking at the layers of the society, understanding the concept of finding one’s atom is extremely fundamental in comprehending the pace and direction of life, providing it with enough impetus and consequently projecting in the most relevant direction. This is what mindfulness is. This is what the practice of self-awareness and reflection is, as guided by the most pious meditation and yoga practices since centuries. For me, creativity and the love of my dear ones are ‘My Atom’. It drives me to accept and embrace challenges in various ways, and keeps me motivated enough to find ways through every situation”.

Music For podcast is available on Dinis Guarda YouTube Channel, Amrita Sen YouTube Channel and major podcast directories.

Investment banker and meditation teacher Jim Conley joins Sunny (Gurpreet) Singh and Thomas Power in the next episode of the ‘Living with Sunny’ Youtube podcast series. The three experts discuss the most prevalent issues in wellness: meditation, Wholistic Wellbeing in the corporate setting, hypnosis, and more. Living with Sunny’s episode X is out now on YouTube and chosen podcast destinations.

Jim Conley is an investment banker, meditation teacher, and one of five co-founders of The Mindforce Institute. He is certified in Contemplative Psychotherapy by the Nalanda Institute, an intensive two-year program integrating Western contemporary psychotherapy, neuroscience, and wellness psychology with the mindfulness and compassion-based systems of Buddhist psychology and meditation. He shares his life story with the listeners.

Conley feels like the way his life panned out was not planned, but he sees the value in it. Early on, he was a pre-med student and an athlete but eventually ended up as a banker. In the end, his penchant for nurturing and generosity of spirit led him into the world of wellness, meditation, mindfulness, and resilience training. In 2019, he created the “Mindful Awareness Training” workshop: a secular overview of the four scopes of mindfulness combined with practical experiential techniques, 8 useful meditation-tastings, and Lovingkindness compassion practices — woven together with neuroscience, psychology and, with the luck of good timing, fueled by global interest in the ‘mindfulness movement’ (i.e. somatic embodied practices combined with visualization).

In the course of the discussion, Singh has made an observation about the value of COVID-19 pandemic:

“I tell my friends that you know, with Covid, what Covid has proven to us is that the emperor has no clothes. And the modern lifestyle is leading to a lot of lifestyle diseases, and we’ve been living with it, we’ve been living with things that we should not live with. We should be addressing them. We should be confronting them. We should be solving them. We should be overcoming them. And that is not happening.”

Jaewon feels that it is important that we, as citizens of a community take active participation in its wholistic wellbeing. “We usually call it the ‘Transparent Governance System’. Because most of the cities develop by very small group of entities. The Smart Cities is more open to its citizens. I mean, citizens’ involvement in these kinds of activities are more important in the Smart City initiatives”, he emphasises.

Particularly talking about wholistic wellbeing of a Smart City, Singh agrees with Jaewon:

“Smart cities should incorporate into their whole framework, how does the community in the Put the humans at the centre of a Smart City. It is about humanity and humans. It is about enabling something for humanity in a positive way. It’s almost like wellbeing should be a core value of Smart Cities”.

Filmmaker Kireet Khurana joins Sunny (Gurpreet) Singh and Thomas Power in the seventh episode of the ‘Living with Sunny’ Youtube podcast series. The three experts discuss the most prevalent issues in wellness: homelessness in India, poverty, impactful filmmaking, and more. Living with Sunny’s episode 7 is out now on YouTube and chosen podcast destinations.

Kireet Khurana is an Indian animator. In his career of 12 years, he has made over 300 short films, documentary films, ad films and also directed India’s first live action-3D animation film “Toonpur Ka Superhero”. Over the years he has won 5 President’s National Awards and 3 International Awards including Japan and Austria. He shares his extensive knowledge as a director with the listeners.

Khurana feels that he has a calling to make meaningful films, regardless of how popular the topic may be. “67 million is the population of France. You have 70 million destitute people in India. And you’re telling me that there is no market for this film? What kind of market are we talking about? Who is going to stand up for them? I mean, there are 42 million sex workers who are, most of them are victims of human trafficking. I know that there is no market for it, but is it about the market? Or is it about having a heart?” says Khurana.

In the corporate responsibility area, Singh has made a plea for the corporations to:

“For every corporation in the world should take ownership of a social initiative, or more than one, or a partial social initiative. Something they’re passionate about and something they believe in. But take ownership of it, don’t write a cheque to a charity. Partner up with it but you own it. Because companies are the best at solving problems, why, because that’s why they were formed in the first place, to solve a problem. That would cause a sea change”.
