Sunny Gurpreet Singh Interview Highlights

About vision behind RoundGlass

RoundGlass is dedicated to empowering and enabling people on their personal wellbeing journey. The company works to achieve this by investing in and developing new technology, sharing knowledge, and focusing on action for the good of the individual, community, and the wider world.

Sunny’s mission with RoundGlass is simple, yet ambitious: to “inspire people to embrace a life of Wholistic Wellbeing to create a happier, healthier, and more joyful world”. What is more, he wants “to transform the prevailing reaction-based approach in the healthcare world to one that’s proactive, focused on prevention in addition to treatment”.

RoundGlass is a company that defines Sunny’s life passions:

“The universe has been kind to me, so my idea with RoundGlass was to give back. I found that the idea of ‘wholistic wellbeing’ was the right way to achieve that and to help others, which is what actually drives me every day. ‘Wholistic wellbeing’ is something that everyone should follow because it makes you feel better; it is all about becoming a better person, mentally, emotionally and physically”.

He does not want the clients to think of RoundGlass the same way they would think of any other company. RoundGlass is a way to implement a concept, a concept of how to live. Using RoundGlass is a way of “getting oneself centred again” and “uncluttering one’s life”.

About wholistic wellbeing

With RoundGlass, Sunny decided to bring the wholistic wellbeing concepts to life. RoundGlass is company that gives people the tools to live good and fulfilling lives. “RoundGlass is a North Star, if you join it and follow it, then your life is sorted. Above all, I feel that wholistic wellness is the next big thing”. Soon, Sunny believes that many companies will have wholistic wellness plans instead of health plans, because that is going to be what people find attractive. “Health plan” is a much narrower concept, and thus does not provide as many benefits.

What is more, according to Sunny:

“Wholistic wellbeing is something that everyone should follow because it makes one feel better; it is all about becoming a better person. Mentally, emotionally, and physically. The wholistic wellbeing notion explores all the verticals, channels, ways that one finds wholeness. This includes meditation, yoga, physical exercise, et cetera. Achieving wholistic wellbeing is like getting a degree in life. It means learning how to live. It gives one tools to answer the following questions: How do I sleep/eat/relax? How do I become a joyful learner for life? How do I give back to nature? How do I give back to the community?”

About the modern work environment

In the modern world it is important to remember that: “Working a lot and hard is never productive. Doing less things, but doing them really well is much more beneficial than working hard. Habits are important. The epidemic of our time is the modern lifestyle, not COVID-19. RoundGlass implements a concept of how to live.”

About his relationship with spirituality

“I was brought up in a Sikh family – an open, giving religion. Therefore, I am a spiritual person by lifestyle. My mum’s one advice to me was: Sunny, no matter what you do in life, never be a crook, never cheat anybody”.

About the corporate culture

RoundGlass has a commercial side where they have to make money, however, they also have a social side – which is just as important. Sunny believes that every corporate should take ownership of one world problem. RoundGlass idea is to showcase the biodiversity of India. What is more, they also have a sports programme for children in India.

“We are building great infrastructure, we are employing great coaches. We are helping kids to become elite sportsmen, or if they do not make it, we will help them get their first job”.

Sunny Gurpreet Singh Biography

Sunny Gurpreet Singh is the founder of Edifecs, RoundGlass and the visionairy behind the Wholistic Wellbeing concept. Sunny Gurpreet Singh is a serial entrepreneur and wellbeing and corporate wellness leader whose life’s work is focused on sustainability and creating global holistic wellness solutions for humanity. He believes RoundGlass to be the ultimate life project of his.

“Everything that happened in my life up to this point, has been in preparation for RoundGlass. The same way, I was destined to become an entrepreneur. Some people are lucky to find their calling in life early. But for the majority of us, as the journey of life unfolds, we are continuously soul searching. The time spent soul searching is, however, not lost. It prepares you for what your real life purpose is, it shapes you, and it shapes your character”.

“My vision with RoundGlass is to bring wholistic wellness solutions to the world. I want to teach people how to fish, show them how to live fulfilled and happy lives in the modern world”.

Edifecs

When Singh launched Bellevue-based Edifecs in 1996, he set some ambitious goals: no venture capitalists and no debt, but instead, growth and profit every year. He has guided the company through economic downturns and the recession and accomplished his goals: Edifecs is a profitable, self-funded, employee-owned company with no debt—as well as one of the fastest-growing health-care technology companies in the United States.

Edifecs helps improve the ways health-care organizations manage and leverage the information they exchange. It also streamlines and automates manual business processes such as enrollment, claims and payments management. The result? Greatly reduced administrative costs and on-target regulatory compliance without the risk, time and cost of replacing existing IT infrastructure.

RoundGlass

His inspiration to launch RoundGlass came from the time when he was going through a challenging time on a professional level. At one point in the early 2000s, Edifecs started to struggle financially, all of which was exacerbated by 9/11. It was a difficult stage in the company’s history. For Sunny, on a personal level, this was a soul-searching stage. Despite already being in talks with bankruptcy lawyers and his friends insisting he left to work for Microsoft, he chose to persist. By 2005, all of Edifecs debts were paid off. During the financial crisis, the company grew aggressively and further expanded. He regards this as a growth story that could inspire many others: “if they could do it then, anyone could”.

What Happens When Work Meets Wellbeing?

Growing up, many of us are raised with a certain philosophy – we work hard, and then we come home. But what that wonderfully simple ethos lacks is the human element that’s different in every member of the workforce. It doesn’t account for how we react to pressure, cope with our own experience and understanding of mental health, and the multitude of other things that affect the way we feel on a day to day basis.

And while this is certainly acknowledged in the world of work more prevalently than ever before, it does leave the question of what more could be done to address it – and what happens when we do.

A reduction in absenteeism?

The potential for improved wellbeing to improve attendance is something no manager or director should ignore. It is estimated that around 30 million working days were lost in the UK, in 2018/2019, with almost 13 million of those due to stress, depression and anxiety.

Whether or not a focus on employee wellbeing would help to reduce this significant number isn’t really important – the potential alone should be enough to take the lead on boosting wellbeing in the workplace.

But what does this look like?

In part, because of statistics like those above, the misapprehension that wellbeing is related solely to mental and physical health is common. However, wellbeing is actually a far broader topic, encompassing factors that go beyond how people feel on the inside.

For instance, wellbeing in work could be a drive to improve physical health too, or educate staff on financial matters. This is one of the reasons that comprehensive wellbeing applications, such as Employee Wellbeing Solutions from Lifeworks, have become immensely popular for employees and employers alike.

Who wants wellbeing in work the most?

Again, those of a certain age may still stoically see the workplace as the… place… we put aside our troubles and focus on what’s in front of us from 9-5. However, as the workforce quickly becomes home to Millennials, and younger people from Generation Z, there are more employees who seriously take wellbeing… seriously!

These are the generations that, according to Forbes, prefer employee benefits, including mental health support, over and above better pay. So although there will still be plenty of people who prefer to get on with their work, and deal with the rest later, they are soon to be outnumbered by the others, who don’t believe that ‘that’ is a healthy way to live.

Whose responsibility is wellbeing in the workplace?

At the end of the day, everyone plays their part. It’s the responsibility of the individual to speak up, if a problem is affecting their work, and life – but the responsibility of the employer to support them. In between them, there are also colleagues who need to know what they can do to improve their peer’s wellbeing, and in what ways their employer can help.

Really though, this is what should happen, when work meets wellbeing. It should be an environment in which both can thrive, and where no problem can’t be a problem shared. To some, it may sound unnecessary, even utopian, but to others it can be genuinely priceless. Plus, sooner or later, everyone one of us will go through a time when our wellbeing needs a tune up – and who better than those we work for, to help guide us through these troubling times?

In a time when burnout at work keep rising, stress levels are at its highest and unhappiness spread around like a silent disease, it is important to slow down a bit and think what really matters. After all, there are things – like healthcare, motivation, our status at work, what we eat, etc – that shouldn’t go unnoticed if we are to achieve a certain level of wellbeing at our work, and to a further extent in our life.

That’s why HSC, the critical illness support specialists, have launched a new trends report for Summer 2019 detailing the significant rise in ‘wellbeing’ as an employee benefit. Included in the guide, the 10 specific employee benefits on trend for Summer 2019 are

1. Virtual healthcare

Digitalisation of the healthcare system is a win-win for all. By empowering employees to better manage their health and providing faster access to health information, will help vulnerable employees stay at work. We’re starting to see smart tech move into intelligent tech – this is the future. Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) in conjunction with machine learning to produce real time, predictive analysis, or in this case, diagnosis, symptom management and prescriptions. Chatbots, telehealth counselling and medication tracking are becoming the norm for when you are health plan shopping.

2. Financial wellbeing

A buzzword in the employee benefits space for some time – but what’s next? Financial stress can have a significant impact on employees’ mental health, leading to signs of depression and anxiety. It is clearly a benefit that will stick around, but companies should look to include other personalised options too, such as health savings accounts, fertility benefits and student loan repayment.

3. Employee-carers

The phenomenon of employee-carers already exists – it’s time for more employers to get on board. It’s natural for employees feel a sense of obligation to provide eldercare or longer-term support to a person with a health condition. Juggling both work and caregiving responsibilities is a stressful challenge for employees, with a tendency to sacrifice their own health over others. Offering something more tangible such as, providing first aid training or a carer support network at work demonstrates how much you care as an employer. A big trend on the way is caregiver leave, which allows employees to take a set amount of paid leave each year to support relatives with serious health illnesses.

4. Workplace stress reduction

Stress affects employees mentally, emotionally and physically, having a knock-on effect on staff absences, burn-out and motivation. It’s no wonder businesses are trying to tackle stress in the workplace. Considerations could include relaxation courses, onsite gym, games rooms and internal activity clubs. As more businesses begin to appreciate stress management, it will form a key part of business employee wellbeing strategy in the coming years.

5. Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs)

Often the first point of contact for employees seeking support. To keep up with employees’ evolving needs, it is likely that more clinical services will be introduced, as well as access to more concierge services for example meals on wheels, sleep coaching, childminders and pet sitters. Although the cost of EAPS may increase for employers in the future, we will also see a rise in adoption and usage as it becomes more relevant and personal for employees.

Typical Employee Assistance Program

6. Nutritionist

Employees spend a good chunk of time at work, therefore it’s not surprising that they consume a third of their calorie intake whilst at work. Next year, we will see companies take healthy breakfasts and fruit bowls to another level. Whether incorporated through an EAP or making available through internal portals, employees could have access to personalised dietary programmes, water reminders, energy monitoring apps and nutrition podcasts tailored for chronic diseases.

7. Disease management

Most businesses focus on health and wellbeing programmes to help their employees get fit and stay healthy. But it’s time to bend the trend and focus on supporting chronic conditions. This could involve plug-and-go modules tailored to individual workforces, for example mental health, cancer or musculoskeletal disorders. By helping employees to better navigate the healthcare system, they are more likely to feel happy, supported and well informed. Watch this space in 2020!

8. Closed for lunch

Restricting access to connected work devices outside of working hours stops employees checking emails late at night or working through lunch, encouraging a better quality of down-time. Organisations are cranking up flexible working by offering some employees fully flexible hours to better balance their work and personal lives. This is more than just a work-from-home culture, using technology at the fore to completely re-imagine the working week. It won’t be long until paw-ternity leave is introduced through flexible working or paid leave.

9. Chatbots

AI-driven technologies are already transforming the HR landscape, from recruitment and training, to employee management. AI shouldn’t replace people in HR, but remove the administrative burden, improve the employee experience and inform business strategy. Chatbots are coming to employee benefits to enrol and onboard new joiners in an agile and personal way. In conjunction with AI, employees could get quick advice on which benefits are best for them, with predictive recommendations each year.

10. Active workplace

There’s been a massive boom in standing desks, treadmill desks and meetings on the move with a ‘talk and walk’ culture. Other ways to reduce stress and improve fitness include company or team step challenges, bike to work and paid volunteering leave. Businesses should utilise gamification to keep these initiatives fresh by incorporating league tables, virtual teams, competitions and rewards for completing fitness and nutrition targets.

Tim Warren, Commercial Director, HSC said, “We’re seeing an upsurge in employers embracing wellbeing strategies and taking a more holistic approach when it comes to employee benefits. This is great for employees, and not just for obvious reasons. Employers are on the lookout for practical solutions that really do help employee’s lives. This is a ‘purple-patch’ in employee benefits; a sort of pool of innovation which is creating new and exciting packages that would not have existed a few years ago.”

The employee benefits landscape is certainly being driven by employees, in particular, the health conscious, tech-savvy generation coming through. It won’t be long until employee wellbeing becomes an employee expectation, not a perk. When planning for your employee wellness programs, it is best to partner with a corporate wellness provider like Zevo Health to ensure a quality program created by experts.
