The Digital Revolution timeline refers to the shift from mechanical devices and analogue electronic technology to digital electronics as a means of storing, transferring and utilizing information. This era started during the 1980s and is ongoing. The Digital Revolution is called the beginning of the Information Era. This is the starting point of what we refer to as the digital revolution which began in the second half of the 20th century. Digital revolution example is the adoption and increase of digital computers and digital storage of information. Digital revolution impact has led to the development of more advanced computer systems. Digital Revolution inventions begin with the invention of the Internet and the rise of home computers. It is sometimes called the Third Industrial Revolution. But why has it become a revolution? The characteristic of digital technology is continually changing; it is progressively branching out and boosting productivity across a wide range of sectors and industries. Different events have led to the broad adoption of digital technologies which have changed forever the way we exchange and use information.

The invention of the revolutionary transistor in 1947 can be considered the beginning of the digital revolution timeline. The transistor, which was introduced in 1947, launched the way for the development of advanced digital computers. The government and various other organizations used computer systems during the 1950s and 1960s. Eventually, the World Wide Web was created. In the 1980s the computer became a familiar machine and gradually by the end of the decade, the ability to use computers became a necessity for many jobs. The way continued and by the late 1990s, the Internet became a normal part of most businesses and a part of everyday life for almost half of the American population. Digital Revolution inventions have caused in the decade 2000s that mobile phones were commonly used. In this decade the number of Internet users increased, furthermore, the television started to transition from using analog to digital signals. Digital revolution impact in the 2010s and beyond led to widespread use of the Internet. As a digital revolution example, mobile communication became very important, as nearly 70 percent of the world’s population owns a mobile phone. The connection between Internet websites and mobile gadgets has become a standard in communication. The innovation of tablet computers made it very easier to use the internet is everywhere. This allowed users to consume media and use business applications on their mobile devices, anytime they need.

Digital revolution inventions

Digital Revolution inventions started with the invention of the revolutionary transistor in 1947. The subsequent technological advancements made computer system components have been produced more energy-efficient and less costly. This digital revolution impact led to the development of computers with more complex processing circuits and storage memory able to hold both the program being run and the data it was working on. The Internet as a digital revolution example has changed many aspects of human life. First companies and then individuals realized the potential to expand the capabilities of computers and other digital devices when connecting to the internet. From then on, the internet expanded quickly, and by 1996 it was part of mass culture and many businesses had websites. Across the globe, the pace of digital transformation is accelerating. The private sector continues to invest in disruptive technologies to get ahead of the competition. They adapt their business models to meet ever-increasing customer expectations.

A global phenomenon

Throughout the 1990s, countries of the developed world began to experience an economic boom. This was largely due to the success of the companies using digital technologies and to the advancements in transmission technologies, including computer networking, the internet and digital broadcasting. In the digital revolution timeline, 1999 was very important, because by then almost every country had an internet connection. That was the time when the digital revolution impact became global, with digital technologies spreading to the developing world in the 2000s. By late 2005, digital revolution inventions led the number of internet users to reach one billion, and by the end of this decade, three billion people worldwide used cell phones. Today More and more individuals are using the digital revolution example, the internet. Internet is used for a wide range of purposes: to communicate, interact with other users and organizations, access, use or make available information, or simply for entertainment. These new technologies allowed users to share resources and apply the principle of economy of scale.

They have started using technology in new ways and in an ever-increasing number of areas of their lives. These systems have been designed to facilitate multiple aspects of our lives. Furthermore, now users can start to have an active role in creating technology. These developments have led to a huge amount of in the digital space and, in parallel, the ability to store it has also grown exponentially, leading today’s society to the middle of the information age. Digital technologies are fundamentally changing how people and businesses work together.

The Internet and home computers

The tendency of humans has always been toward making life easier. The Industrial Revolution create a new era, with abundant mechanization. The pace of changes in technologies continues to blur the boundaries of the physical and digital worlds. It is redefining traditional industry sectors and the way we live and work. These emerging technologies, growing amounts of data and smarter ways of getting insights are changing the way people’s lives, and businesses and governments way of interact.

Next-Generation Technologies

Digital technology will form the backbone of next-generation technologies and digital revolution inventions. In the digital revolution timeline, as digital connectivity extends to transport systems, it can lead to more equitable, efficient, and safer mobility. This suggests opportunities for countries to reshape the way people, goods, and services travel. Digital revolution impact with new technology, and hyper-connectivity of devices, enables technology-led efficiency gains of transport systems and beyond. Positive global trends over the past decade include improvement in logistics performance and fuel economy, both of which contribute to reducing the aggregate cost of goods, as well as fossil fuel energy consumption. The biggest impact of the digital revolution on low- and middle-income countries, however, will likely be through new manufacturing process technologies that affect the production of traditional manufactured goods.

MIT Technology Review has recently published a list of 10 Breakthrough Technologies for 2022. They ranged from, the topical, covid variant tracking technologies, through new forms of authentication (no more passwords), to the malaria vaccines, and more. Below, we go into more depth about, in our eyes, the most impressive innovations from the list. At the same time, there have been at least two technologies that the MIT article did not mention, but are of enormous significance: the Metaverse and lab-grown meat. We explain how the Web 3.0-powered Metaverse has the potential to transform the world as we know it into a new, digital reality.

The List of Most Important Breakthrough Technologies for 2022

1. No more passwords

For the past decades, passwords have been the cornerstone of interacting in the digital world. The problem with passwords is obvious; they are vulnerable to hacker and phishing attacks. The newest type of attack is called “browser in browser” attack, and, according to the tech journalist Paul Wagenseil, it is a perfect “pop-up” scam, and the way it works is as follows:

“The window isn’t really a pop-up, but instead part of the underlying web page. However, you can actually grab the pop-up window and move it around by clicking the title bar with your mouse cursor.” 

Not many people would be able to tell that the pop-up is a fake window, as it is pretty convincing. So what is the alternative, you may ask? No more passwords. The Fast Identity Online Alliance has worked for nearly a decade now on killing passwords. The new system will allow users to log into their online accounts. According to the Wall Street Journal:

“Rather than sending a password over a network susceptible to outside interference, users connect a public key, which sits on the account service provider’s server, to a private one, which cannot be removed from their device.”

2. The malaria vaccine

More than 130 years after naming the parasite behind the illness, the world finally has a malaria vaccine. It is about time, as it is estimated that malaria still kills more than 600,000 people a year, most of them children younger than five. The new vaccine has finally been approved by the World Health Organization, and although questions around its efficacy remain, it is still a sizeable step forward.  According to Nature magazine: “Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, helped to fund the pilot programmes, which have distributed 2.3 million vaccine doses across Ghana, Kenya and Malawi. It reports that in these studies, hospitalizations from severe malaria decreased by about 30%.” If deaths and serious hospitalizations worldwide could be cut by 30%, that would mean that around 180,000 human lives could be saved each year. After the Covid-19 pandemic has taken its toll, it is uplifting to finally see some positive news on the disease research front.

3. Law-grown meat

Lab-grown meat, the best 100% clean and disease free substitute for meat, is coming. The benefits are an ever-growing list: lab-grown meat will be cruelty-free, will use less energy, land, and water. Animal cruelty can be a thing of the past if we wish. Another alternative is eating insects (by 2030 it will reach a market size of $8 billion), although that sounds like a less desirable or appealing option to many. Lab-grown meat has recently been given green light in Singapore, where a company Eat Just is leading the way. As Josh Tetrick, of Eat Just, said:

“I think the approval is one of the most significant milestones in the food industry in the last handful of decades. It’s an open door and it’s up to us and other companies to take that opportunity. My hope is this leads to a world in the next handful of years where the majority of meat doesn’t require killing a single animal or tearing down a single tree.”

4. Carbon removal

Although the quest for a healthier, more sustainable, greener planet is being joined by more and more people each day, preventive action may not be enough at this point. This is why we need air carbon removal technologies to step in. “The number of things that would have to happen without direct air capture is so stretching and multiple it’s highly unlikely we can meet the Paris Agreements without it,” Ajay Gambhir, senior researcher at the Imperial College Grantham Institute for Climate Change, said recently. Although the technology is still expensive and in its infancy (the estimates for the price range from $100 to $1,000 (£72 to £720) per tonne), it is the future.

5. The Metaverse, Web 3.0

Almost every industry can benefit from a broad implementation of a tailored Metaverse technology. The gaming industry was a pioneer in that regard, experiencing a huge frameshift over the past years and being worked upon by various major gaming companies around the globe to massively successful products like World of Warcraft or Pokemon.  New players, like the Polygon ecosystem, use Blockchain to expand transparency for the community, deploy new reward systems, and offer possibilities to scale communities.

Similarly, platforms like Fortnite bring advanced staple features of Metaverse. Blockchain pairs with the Metaverse to provide transparency to its functioning and expansion. NFTs as rewards and better engagements have become increasingly necessary for the virality and monetisation of digital content, creators, and other industry participants.

As Dinis Guarda, the Founder of citiesabc and the author of “NFT Metaverse Uprising”, noted:

“As the Metaverse is evolving with time, it is increasing its scope of applications that are likely to affect the global economy in a more powerful way. According to a study by PwC, the Metaverse ecosystem will be worth over 1.5 trillion by the year 2030. The world is already witnessing its effects in many ways. In industries like the digital-twin technology, gaming, healthcare, the Metaverse iterations comprehend virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) or simply game-driven education communities using a screen.”

2022 is here. Almost every industry – food, tech, health, and more – will be affected by the innovations this year is supposed to bring. Although most of them are at an early stage of development, and we are yet to see something truly tangible, others, like the malaria vaccine, has already proven effective. As for the rest, we have to wait and see.

Further XAI rollout expected while companies acquire synthetic data training start-ups to poach talent

“2022 will see the further rollout of XAI, enabling companies to identify potential discrimination in their systems’ algorithms. Companies must correct their models to mitigate bias in data. Organizations that drag their feet will face increasing scrutiny as AI continues to permeate our society, and people demand greater transparency. For example, in the Netherlands, the government’s use of AI to identify welfare fraud was found to violate European human rights.

“Reducing human bias present in training datasets is a huge challenge in XAI implementation. Even tech giant Amazon had to scrap its in-development hiring tool because it was claimed to be biased against women.

“Further, companies will be desperate to improve their XAI capabilities—the potential to avoid a PR disaster is reason enough. GlobalData expects to see acquisitions of start-ups specializing in synthetic data training in an attempt to poach talent, demonstrated by Meta’s acquisition of AI.Reverie in October 2021.”

AI will need to become practical and unobtrusive for smooth integration into software

“After years of AI hype, we are now in the era of practical AI. It will be integrated into the software and will play its role unobtrusively and autonomously. Look no further than Amazon Go for an example of automated AI in action.

“There will be fewer unmet promises of AI revolutionizing life as we know it. Instead, companies will focus on creating actual AI use cases.”

Big tech’s advantage in AI will only widen as small firms can do more with less data

“Data and computing power are essential for AI development, and big tech companies have both in abundance. There are vast numbers of AI start-ups, but their future often lies in being acquired by big tech.

“However, the future of AI may be less dominated by big data. Doing more with less offers smaller companies a glimmer of hope. This is being made possible by innovative methods that enable algorithms to be trained using limited information.”

Trade visit to highlight how UK innovation is changing lives and livelihoods in sub-Saharan Africa

27 August 2018, Cambridge, United Kingdom – Cambridge tech firm Azuri Technologies, a leading provider of pay-as-you-go solar home systems to off-grid consumers, will join Prime Minister Theresa May and a British business delegation on a trade mission to Africa to strengthen business relations between African countries and the United Kingdom.

Azuri CEO Simon Bransfield-Garth will join the select group of UK business leaders travelling to the continent to meet with government officials and trade ambassadors from South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya over a week-long tour to further the UK’s position as a trading partner.

Africa has some of the fastest growing economies in the world and British businesses are ideally placed to support this growth and improve the lives of millions of consumers,” commented Azuri CEO Simon Bransfield-Garth.

Azuri entered the solar market in Africa in 2012 and is now one of the leading providers of pay-as-you-go solar power lighting and TV systems, working in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Nigeria.

With over 600 million people in Africa having no access to electricity and many such households located in regions where the cost of rolling out grid electricity would be prohibitively expensive, the Cambridge-based company has been selling its innovative solar home solutions, delivering reliable, renewable and distributed power on an affordable pay-as-you-go basis.

In Nigeria, Azuri solar power was been installed in some 20,000 off-grid households in the North of the country in 2017 as part of the Government’s “Beyond the Grid” initiative and further commercial installations are underway in 2018.

Across East Africa, Azuri is working with major local partner companies to bring solar power at scale to off-grid households, including the provision of seamless solar powered satellite TV providing over 50 channels.

In addition to providing power, to date Azuri has created over 5,000 new jobs via partner companies to sell, support and maintain solar home systems.

Solar power has been shown to have powerful economic and social benefits. Latest data shows solar households on average increased their income by US$35 per month. In addition, children in solar-powered homes were able to study for up to 90 minutes longer in the evenings, compared to households with conventional fuel lamps.

In 2018, Azuri was named the 233rd fastest growing company in Europe by Financial Times and Red Herring’s Top 100 Europe.

Azuri’s solar TV, the first solar home television on the market, continues to collect be industry accolades, the most recently being the ‘Innovative Technology of the Year’ award at the annual Africa Utility Week Industry Awards. Azuri also won an Edison Award for its innovation and excellence.
