98% of the world’s top one million websites don’t offer full accessibility to the 1.7 plus billion people with disabilities. To tackle this, openbusinesscouncil.org – the global digital certification blockchain and AI-powered directory and citiesabc.org – the Metaverse for cities directory with an NFT marketplace have partnered with leading inclusion organisations: Ruh Global IMPACT & Billion Strong.

Data from the UN and global leading organisations highlights that more than 25% of the world’s population (1.7+ billion people) experience some form of disability. A large proportion of disabilities occur in the developing world. If we add to this the lack of accessible digital platforms, the problem becomes even more pronounced, as 98% of the world’s top one million websites do not offer full accessibility to people with disabilities.

Ruh Global IMPACT an international social enterprise accessibility and inclusion consultancy and Billion Strong, a Global Nonprofit Organisation, focused on identity and empowerment for the 1.7 Billion persons with disabilities, has signed an agreement with the digital Metaverse platforms and leadership from Citiesabc.com and openbusinesscouncil.org created and powered by ztudium Limited in developing an accessible immersive digital web 3.0 Metaverse, inclusive, and engaging technology Lab and platform to create empowering solutions for everyone of this community.

Digitally accessible platforms should pledge to focus their efforts on three main areas: hearing, vision, and colour blindness. And those are the principles that this partnership will focus on: to develop a series of digital toolsets within their platforms to make sure they are fully accessible to all while building an accessible index tech to reflect access to these platforms with an all-inclusive metaverse that bridges the gap between the real and digital world with augmented experiences.

Building all-inclusive digital platforms for billions of people with disabilities

The joint venture’s mission is to improve the lives of the often-ignored, disenfranchised, global disability communities. The term “Persons with Disability” (PWDs) refers to individuals who suffer long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, upon interaction with various barriers, may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others. This includes hundreds of millions of children, adults, senior citizens and refugees.

“We believe in creating a better world which is supporting the 25% plus of the global population with disabilities, using accessibility ESG-focused tools, technology, that offers a support system to those unable to see, move or having issues as simple as moving from their home or sending an email or reading a website. The two organizations and platforms: openbusinesscouncil and citiesabc, have been working on tackling this challenge for the 1.7+ billion that are left aside, digitally wise. These aim to be immersive, digitally inclusive, and accessible for businesses and city-based ecosystems. Data is the fuel for the rapidly progressing Artificial Intelligence (AI) industry -as it is for almost all other industries. Digitisation, interconnection of the network channels, and IoT generate mountainous volumes of data at an unimagined and unprecedented scale. IDC predicts that more than 175 zettabytes of data will be available by 2025, growing at an exponential rate. Thus, unbelievable data would be available, and accessible to all. However, there are still a huge number of AI innovations and projects that do not reach the stage of viability, owing to an insufficient amount of data.

The inaccessibility of authentic data for innovation and AI

Accurate data collection and processing is extremely straining in terms of expenses and time. While certain sectors like financial services, telecom, healthcare, internet companies, retail, etc, are in direct contact with the customer data, this access is restricted only to these touchpoints.

Then there is another category of data that is fragmented and siloed. Stringent regulations like GDPR watch over the sharing of data that can be processed only with user consent, strictly for lawful purposes. Data security measures are another reason that restricts data access over a larger scale. The data related to Research and Development requires regular hypothesis testing. This is, thus, another challenge pertaining to the presence of any real-time data from the field.

While AI projects require deep learning and innovation are constantly ravenous for large volumes of data, both structured and unstructured, to train models. Scarcity and huge expenses for labelled training data make it difficult to make it available for AI.

These challenges decelerate authentic data monetisation and realisation of benefits (from innovation and business). This is a major reason for many great projects to never even see the light of the day. While alternatives like data masking, anonymisation, and obfuscation ensure data security and privacy to abundant data, synthetic data is a preferred choice when data is scarce.

Synthesising data

Data generated as a result of using computer algorithms and simulations to the real-time data is synthetic data. Digitally synthesising data reflects the real-world either statistically or mathematically. Simply put, the data is generated by reproducing the statistical properties and patterns of the existing real-time datasets. This is done by modelling the probability distribution of these datasets and sampling them out. Essentially, the algorithm creates a new dataset with the same characteristics as the original data.

Although this synthesised data lead to the same answers, is it almost impossible that the original data can be ever reconstructed from either the algorithm or this synthesised data. Thus, synthetic data is almost as potent as the original data with equal predictive power. It further carries no baggage of privacy concerns or restricted usage of any kind.

Synthetic data is being increasingly employed for a wider range of applications. For instance, Syntegra is using its synthetic data generator to create and validate an anonymous replica of NIH’s database. This database has a record of more than 2.7 million individuals that have been screened for COVID-19 and more than 413,000 patients that have tested positive. This synthetic data set duplicates the real-time data quite precisely. Due to its anonymous nature, the data can be conveniently shared and used by researchers and medical professionals worldwide. A remarkable step to accelerate the progress in research for COVID-19 treatment and vaccines.

The AI team at Amazon uses synthetic data on Alexa for training its NLU system (National Language Understanding). Consequently, new versions of Alexa in three new languages have come out: Hindi, Brazilian Portuguese, and US Spanish. This invalidates any further use of large customer interaction data. Synthetic data is also being used by Waymo, a Google company, to train its autonomous vehicles. Synthetic data technology is extremely useful for American Express to enhance its fraud detection capabilities.

Synthetic data could, therefore, fill in the gaps that are hindering the evolution of AI technology. These are proving increasingly helpful in creating inexpensive, yet accurate, AI models. According to MIT Technology Review, Synthetic data for AI is among the top 10 breakthrough technologies in 2022. Analyst firm Gartner predicts: “By 2024, 60% of the data used to develop AI and analytics projects will be synthetically generated. The fact is you won’t be able to build high-quality, high-value AI models without synthetic data.”

Potential challenges

With compelling benefits, authentic and accurate synthetic data generation requires truly advanced knowledge and specialised skill sets. Further, the required sophisticated frameworks should be put up to enable its validation and alignment with the objective.

It is critical that the synthetic data generated does not relate to or expose the original data set in any way, while it should match the important patterns in the original. Failing would result in either overlooking potentially larger opportunities or generating inaccurate insights for any subsequent efforts to model the data.

For the AI models that have been trained on synthetic data generated by simply copying the original one, there is always a risk that inherent historical biases might creep in. Complex adjustments are, therefore, necessary for a fairer and more representative synthetic data set. Hard, yet achievable.

For the synthetic data generated that has been optimised on a predetermined abstract of fairness, the resulting dataset accurately reflects the original one while still maintaining inherent fairness. So, no bias mitigation strategies are needed, with no compromise on predictive accuracy.

The certainty of synthetic data in AI’s future

“There is a risk of false, early-stage perceptions surrounding the use of synthetic data in some circles. This is most likely due to the naming of the term itself, as anything ‘synthetic’ might naturally be thought of as plasticized, non-organic, or in some way fake. But, of course, there should be nothing more natural than machine learning tuition being driven by machine intelligence. Properly generated, managed, maintained, and secured, synthetic data’s level of bias handling, safety, privacy, and cadence represent a significant accelerator and enabler for the AI capabilities of tomorrow”, Nelson Petracek, CTO, TIBCO Software.

Already being used in healthcare (for training the machines to monitor a patient’s post-op recovery), security and surveillance (for detecting a suspicious object or behavioural pattern), and delivery drones, synthetic data is progressively making an accelerated advancement in its evolution.

Synthetic data, surely, is synthetic in origin, but it has real-world DNA to it. Its validation and application are unbelievably tangible, pragmatic, and multifarious. Nevertheless, it is, in fact, a reality we all exist in.

A digital twin is an initiative to realise this velocity and provide an entry point to this vast immersive world. This is a secure way to introduce a real-world space that is dimensionally precise into the virtual mirror world of the Metaverse.

IBM’s version of a digital twin is “a virtual representation of an object or system that spans its lifecycle, is updated from real-time data, and uses simulation, machine learning, and reasoning to help decision-making”. In other words, it is a virtual model that is designed in such a manner that reflects an object in the physical world. For instance, the data collected from a packaged food manufacturing unit by various sensors (that measure its performance through parameters like efficiency, input, output, etc.) is applied to create its digital copy (or twin). This virtual model operates in a simulated environment to generate valuable insights about its performance.

The digital twin solution on the Metaverse

Real-world is a complex cluster of spatial elements, coordinating with biotic and abiotic components in a dynamic way. A digital twin, thus, mirrors the real world with similar characteristics, processes, integration, and composition, thereby simulating its capabilities.

A digital twin in IoT seamlessly integrates with data analytics for a plethora of applications- maintenance prediction and fault detection, smart city technologies, intrusive surgery and diagnostics in medical and healthcare, traffic management, viability and efficiency of manufacturing processes, and fault analysis, to name just a few.

Stefano Corazza, head of augmented reality at Adobe says, “We have a very diverse pool of customers, and they are all trying to establish their standard workflow to get to high fidelity digital goods. The one thing they all have in common is the need for the creation of digital twins for all the goods that the brand is representing”.

A Metaverse version consists of multiple digital twins combined to form a composite digital twin technology.

The digital twin economy

According to a report by Grand View Research, the size of the digital twin market is anticipated to reach $86.09 billion by the year 2028. This growth is majorly driven by the use cases under Industrial Revolution 4.0 (4IR). The increasing demand for Industrial IoT solutions, asset health optimisation (and predictive maintenance), large-scale smart city infrastructure, and energy efficiency (and carbon-neutral economy).

For example, Smart cities, alone, are estimated to account for 2 billion sensors and connected infrastructure. This creates an extensive avenue for the development of digital twin technology, creating virtual cities over the Metaverse.

The privacy concerns with digital twins

Privacy concerns always surface where there is personal data in the picture. Behavioural assessments, the successful culmination of training programs, and 360 surveys are all examples where data has empowered digital twin technology. Maintaining transparency with scrutinised accessibility is the key to a healthier Metaverse with ‘twin’ versions.

Other threatening issues that need to be dealt with are- Intellectual Property theft (hacking of the digital twin blueprint), non-compliance of data, and disrupting the integrity of personal information. Further XAI rollout expected while companies acquire synthetic data training start-ups to poach talent

“2022 will see the further rollout of XAI, enabling companies to identify potential discrimination in their systems’ algorithms. Companies must correct their models to mitigate bias in data. Organizations that drag their feet will face increasing scrutiny as AI continues to permeate our society, and people demand greater transparency. For example, in the Netherlands, the government’s use of AI to identify welfare fraud was found to violate European human rights.

“Reducing human bias present in training datasets is a huge challenge in XAI implementation. Even tech giant Amazon had to scrap its in-development hiring tool because it was claimed to be biased against women.

“Further, companies will be desperate to improve their XAI capabilities—the potential to avoid a PR disaster is reason enough. GlobalData expects to see acquisitions of start-ups specializing in synthetic data training in an attempt to poach talent, demonstrated by Meta’s acquisition of AI.Reverie in October 2021.”

AI will need to become practical and unobtrusive for smooth integration into software

The world is witnessing an increasing demand for wireless networks, projecting an unprecedented rise in data traffic in the near future. Tech advancements made to satisfy this demand should go in sync with the goal of reducing carbon emissions by the ICT industry. As part of their social responsibility to grow in a sustainable manner, Huawei committed at the Better World Summit (Dubai, October 18) to incorporating green development as a key pillar of their business operations.

Huawei, one of the leading global providers of ICT infrastructure and smart devices, hosted the Better World Summit (BWS) in partnership with Informa Tech in Dubai on October 18, 2021. The event marked both companies’ commitment to green development, especially in the areas of ICT related technologies. Throughout the event, both companies’ representatives laid out a battery of green, sustainable and more efficient tech solutions to cut carbon emissions drastically, including the creation of a platform to that end.

And that would be only possible thanks to a collaborative effort of the network industry, materialized in the BWS under the Network Carbon Intensity (NCI) initiative, proposed jointly by the two companies back in June 2021. “With our innovative products and solutions, we will help operators cut carbon emissions and make their networks more energy efficient. We also want to work with operators and use ICT to better enable other industries to cut carbon emissions and become carbon neutral faster.” Bob Cai, Chief Marketing Officer of Huawei’s Carrier Business Group.

Bob Cai went on to assure that Huawei has set out on a mission to bring industry partners and operators together. For the CMO, this is a key step to share their latest and innovative technology and practices, cutting down carbon emissions and contributing to a greener ICT industry.

Taking place in the thriving city of Dubai The Better World Summit: Green ICT for Green Development gathered world-recognized speakers such as Richard Mahony, Vice President of Service Provider Markets of Informa Tech; Dr. Dena Assaf, UN Resident Coordinator of the United Arab Emirates; Dr. Ahmed Bin Ali, Corporate Communications SVP of Etisalat; Hervé Suquet, Group Energy SVP of Orange; Dirk Karl, Chief Procurement Officer of MTN; and Tanveer Mohammad, SVP of Global Operation of Telenor, and more.

The Role of the ICT Industry: Building Greener Network Solutions

While delivering his keynote speech “Green 5G Lights the Way to a Low Carbon Future ” Aaron Jiang, Vice President of Wireless Product Line, Huawei, presented the promising aspects of 5G technology as a rapidly emerging innovative engine to drive the growth of wireless networks.

He emphasized that: “In this context, we must innovate equipment, sites, and networks from end to end, to build green 5G networks that will facilitate low-carbon development”.

5G has become an essential wireless technology for industries, allowing for:

1) Enhanced Mobile Broadband, which enables faster data speeds as total capacity is expanded. This helped the introduction of first-edition 5G smartphones and fixed wireless access (FWA) services;

2) Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Connectivity, which is essential for autonomous driving, industrial automation and remote medical assistance applications; and

3) Massive Machine Type Control, which ensures 5G mobile networks are able to connect millions of devices per square kilometre – essential for the development of connected smart cities of the future.

Making this technology more efficient and greener is thus key to Huawei’s mission. The company is working hard towards that goal and has started to implement more efficient solutions in use cases all around the world.

Within that context, Huawei announced the flagship of their exhibition of various technological solutions for a greener future in “Innovation High Land” themed on “Lightning up the future” at Dubai, -that would remain open until the February of the next year-.

Mr. Cai told the delegates at the summit that, currently, the ICT industry enables other industries like coal mining, ports, manufacturing and agriculture, just to name a few. “ICT can make a great contribution to these industries to not only improve efficiency but to bring green solutions to realize carbon neutrality”.

For example, Huawei has deployed technologies like 5G, IoT, and cloud to agriculture in Switzerland to exemplify the application of technology for sustainable operations. To improve farmland management, it has partnered with others to use 5G empowered drones for targeted inspection of crops, intelligent computing, and control to reduce pesticide by about four-fifths, and herbicide use by half using AI on cloud. Mr. Cai assured that green ICT technologies will offer similar benefits to various other industries.

Tommy Stalden, Co-founder and General Partners of Giant Ventures, delegated the session “What a tech-enabled low carbon world looks like for consumers”. He lauded the technologies that Huawei showcased adding that it would help workers together even when they are apart.

R&D: Where The Green Tech Is Born

Huawei invests more than 10% of its sales revenue into R&D, pursuing innovations for continued improvements in efficiency. Its innovative solutions for telecom networks include algorithms for high-performance, technologies for effective heat dissipation, and the development of new materials. This promises to enhance energy efficiency in the telecom sector, as they showcased at the BWS.

With the aim to reduce its own carbon footprint, Huawei has installed a fully hydroelectric-powered R&D centre at Chengdu in Central China. Annually, while consuming 200mKWh of energy, it saves 177,000 tonnes of carbon. This is almost equal to planting 7.7 million trees. The company extends such efforts by assisting other organizations to cut their carbon emissions too.

Huawei also shared their Power 2.0 initiative at BWS. This is a result of its continuous innovation in the previous version of the software Power 1.0 (2018). After the success of its first version, this upgrade imparts a potentially more intelligent base station that can double its energy-saving performance. Aaron Jiang, Vice President of Wireless Product Line, Huawei commented, “Energy consumption is reduced by 25%, but KPIs are the same”.

Green Solutions At BWS

The company believes that end-to-end hardware innovation benefits in two ways- improving the energy efficiency of the device, and simplifying site construction in order to harness the maximum potential the site holds.

MetaAAU is one such hardware innovation to help the operators build green networks using an extremely large antenna array (ELAA). According to the field tests carried out in Hangzhou (China’s eastern Zhejiang), this reduces the power consumption by 30% while providing the same level of coverage.

Adding to the list, Mr. Jiang introduced Ultra-wideband RRU modules to integrate multiple single-band devices down into a single box with an ultra-compact form factor using ultra-wideband power amplifiers, advanced algorithms, and hardware units. This provides support for more bands and improves network coverage and capacity, without affecting power consumption.

The delegates learnt about the ultra-wideband RRU modules deployed 1800MHz and 2100MHz on top of the previous 2600MHz by a Russian operator, achieving a reduction in energy consumption by 16.4%, while improving the overall capacity by about 12%.

The company’s latest cabinet APM5950 can deploy outdoor sites with no requirement of equipment rooms or air conditioners, thereby reducing the overall site power consumption by 30%. This utilizes solar power to compensate for the main power consumption. This has been deployed in Greece, where the mains power consumption has been reduced by greater than 50%.

An intelligent innovation where service traffic collaborates with site hardware enabling it to adjust the power supply while maintaining the consumption efficiency, based on the traffic load, reduced the power consumption by 24% in Shanghai. Other features that enhance the optimal efficiency at the site operation include- service-adapted energy usage and service-driven smart temperature control.

One aspect of technology that could not draw much attention until recently has been achieving energy efficiency in antennas. Huawei has been achieving major breakthroughs here too. It has developed signal direct injection feeding (SDIF) technology through highly integrated design and advanced processing that is able to create a cable-free antenna structure. This facilitated a reduction in energy leak by the cables by eliminating about 100m cable length and eventually boosting its efficiency by 15%. Above that, with 20% lower transmit power, the same level of coverage could be achieved.

A Greener Commitment For The Future

According to the NCI initiative, proposed jointly by Huawei and Informa Tech, the new metric for green networks is the carbon emissions per bit of data used. Huawei believes that the pursuit of better lives must balance the need for lower carbon emissions. With BWS, Huawei takes a leap to realize its dream for green development.

Welcoming all industry partners and operators at the forum, Cai said, “At MWC Barcelona, 2022, Huawei will continue to hold a green development forum with its partners to share industry practices and latest solutions”.

Susan Oh Biography

Based in Badung, Bali, Indonesia, Susan Oh is a former journalist, a civic technologist in AI and blockchain and business executive. Susan speaks around the world on the importance of data sovereignty, blockchain and tokenomics, and for the responsible development of human-centric AI.

In this era of misleading disinformation and fake news, Susan founded MKR AI, a company that uses AI to flag disinformation. They use blockchain, offering token rewards to users who are invited to verify, annotate, and curate stories that have value. It is their hypothesis that the spread of disinformation is a problem of shareability, technology, and ideology, a great way to promote confirmation bias. MKR AI is an AI Partners Fund portfolio company, built by Crane AI, and trained by Trane AI.

Susan is a governing member of Blockchain For Impact at the UN General Assembly and is the recipient of The Quantum Impact Award #DecadeOfWomen in partnership with the UN GA as one of the Top Ten Frontier Women in Digital.

She started her career as a journalist and project manager at CNBC Asia after she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism at Ryerson University. She was a travel correspondent for Hong Kong Holiday Magazine and at the same time worked as a freelancer at Economist Intelligence Unit, Newsweek International, and The Independent based in Hong Kong.

She became associate editor for Maclean’s Magazine in 1999 and appeared weekly on-air at U8TV between 2001 and 2002. In the same year, she became Creative Writer at Oh! Communication in Toronto, worked as a reporter and producer for CBS Radio & TV, while she freelanced and travelled as an Entertainment writer. She joined Corus Entertainment in 2007 where she was a Creative Writer until 2007 when she again joined Oh! Communication as a Journalist and Advisor to Startups, where she still works today. In 2017, she worked on the AI Blockchain Industry at Trane AI and soon founded MKR AI in the same year.

About Robotics and The Future of Work

I’ve always said for years that I want robots to do the work that people don’t want to do, cannot do, or should never do. This is the stuff that is repetitive, needs speed and consistency over hundreds of thousands of steps, or is plain dangerous or unhealthy. I see robots freeing us from manual labour to let humans be more human and humane. That’s the hope. History won’t back me on this, but every hundred years, life does get better for all.

About UN SDGs, Climate Change And Tech for Good

The UN gave us Sustainable Development Goals — which is a framework, but poor as a  metric system. Metrics are data-focused and must be hyper localized. I’ve focussed on financial inclusion and to end slavery – and slavery I have a broad definition of, meaning you are working for free without reward for your personal benefit.

We’re not the first nor the only ones doing this, but with NFTs, Defi protocols and digital assets, it’s possible to come up with a more accurate valuation of upright trees to the global economy, using spectral satellite data for a carbon offset, specifies to areas by coordinates, even down to the trees. For landowners, this provides liquidity, and land stewards, better metrics to be able to harvest sustainably. And we, investors get to decide what holds value for us, not just as market makers and consumers.

Technology like AI and blockchain are only tools that can help productivity- that’s why I’ve also had to do a dive on business and revenue models as to who creates value, assesses that value, and partakes or benefits from the value created. Bad business models — like the ad revenue model — ruins perfectly good tech. It’s all how you use it.

The Future of Tech

I know what I’d like to see, and then balance it with what I’m seeing. In the long run, technology improves the quality of life and lifespan for all. In the short term, though, there will always be speculators and bad actors. The most critical factor is human and self-hacking. People, do your own research, learn as much as possible on your own, validate your assumptions through fellowship with others who are principally aligned with the world you want to create. And don’t let the bastards get you down.I see a world where everyday people get to determine value, and have the heavy lifting of manual labor taken over by robots. And those adoption cycles get shorter and shorter. How this tech gets used, all these systems, needs us humans to be responsible and accountable.
