Analytics Head at Gramener, Sundeep Reddy Mallu, engages with Hilton Supra, Vice Chairman of ztudium Ltd., at the latest episode of citiesabc podcast for Dinis Guarda. They talk about the application of data analytics, realising the ESG goals, and data relevance and security.

Sundeep Reddy Mallu pursued Electrical Engineering at the undergraduate level and began his journey by selling seeds to the farmers in his native place. Grasping the basics from his early years, he postgraduate in management and business administration with Marketing and IT as his majors. He gives credit to this stellar journey that made him adept with Data Science skills and being able to deliver business values to Fortune 100 clients globally.

Sundeep is currently serving as SVP Analytics at Gramener to advise executives on aligning their data science strategy with business vision. He is also responsible for building teams to apply analytics and data visualisation, while also helping businesses adopt a data-driven culture. His keen interest in the application of Data Science and Machine Learning in ESG makes him believe that the action of humanity in the next decade would be critical.

“It’s no longer within 1.5ºC of temperature rise. It’s the case of how far are we overshooting it. This means ESG, as an overall ecosystem is gaining traction. This is evident in the number of companies who are making public commitments to carbon-neutral initiatives. This means that the climate effects are slowly starting to show up in the company top lines and bottom lines.”, he indicates.

Hilton asked Sundeep about the drivers that helped him apply his skills to agriculture in India. He fondly replies that though India is a country with its own share of challenges, he has been able to provide leverage by introducing simple yet effective technological concepts to farming.

While citing the exemplary work he has done in the country, Sundeep adds, “The kind of solutions that we could bring into the Indian context was way different from the ones in the US, particularly due to the huge difference in the percentage of population dependent on farming as their primary source of income. Therefore, while the AI and ML applications have been in practice for a very long time in the US, India is still experimenting with tailor-made solutions. With startups budding up in the country, there seems to be a whole lot of optimal progress being made here”.

On this note, Hilton was interested to know what prompted Sundeep to join Gramener. In the words of Sundeep, “The vision of Gramener is about the public impact. While the organisation is a commercial entity, the underlying goal that the founder’s support is the impact it makes on society. The intent is to take the help of data to narrate inside stories to create action so that impossibilities can come to life. Gramener focuses on custom solution-building in pharmaceutical and life sciences, logistics, and ESG.”

He further adds, “Given that our ESG solutions span not just across climate or agritech alone, it’s the fusion of these multiple problems that interlap with each other. And we, being at a position, where we can understand the science part of it the climate standpoint, understanding the solution point of it from a technology standpoint, we are fortunate that we are able to play a small role in this big picture of assisting in the ESG space to our clients.”

On being asked by Hilton about how data is managed, Sundeep tells him that to reduce the noise and create relevant data, technology helps them connect to various data sources. They are also able to aggregate the data, and standardise the data cleaning access and data quality checks, thus reducing the manual effort.

Sundeep told Hilton that three basic ways to maintain data ethics at Gramener involve the collection of only the required data, maintaining standards even while procuring the data from the third party, and aligning the policies while complying with industry regulations.

Explaining the challenges while providing solutions that meet ESG goals, Sundeep says, “The popular culture, folklore, is for companies like big companies consuming every data that they can collate and use it. They have the means and resources to spend on these. When it comes to the ESG space, you already have a limited monetary means that you have. That is a space where we invest a lot of time to optimize that stretch the dollar to the longest possible impact. And getting the data right is a big step in how much you invest. Because each of these solutions has to be maintained in a longer haul. It’s n0t that you built that and it’s done. These are the systems that have to survive and fight any of the windows. Unlike other engagements, ESG engagements don’t give you results in a quarter, they have their long tail where they play and out and they generate value, which means every system that you build has to withstand the test of the time. And that’s where creating a long pull- the total cost of ownership of a solution goes a long way. And hence, starting with data is key”.

Concluding the interview that promises to enlighten the audiences with its deeper impact and awareness about the challenges in creating a sphere of intersection between technological advancements (AI, Data Sciences, and ML) with ESG, Hilton asks Sundeep to give his views on the future that lies here. “The hunger for data is constant. What we will see increasingly happen in my view is that the access to data would become uniform. The differentiation would not be a lot more different. How data gets put to use for digital making is what will go into a drastic change”, he shares.

Tech, Social Impact And Equality: Global Thought Leader Prof. Lisa Short At Dinis Guarda Podcast

A thought leader and a preeminent authority, Professor Lisa Short has led multiple frontiers in digital technology systems, design thinking, education, and removing disparities. On the latest episode of citiesabc’s podcast with Dinis Guarda, Prof. Short shares some inspiring insights of her journey through business and technology and spreading empowerment across the globe.

Professor Short began her career with a small business, after her early education in accounting and financial management. This initial venture helped her understand the importance of building relationships and establishing an ecosystem for a business to thrive. Over the course of her entire career of 35 years, Prof. Short has been able to bring a transformational change using powerful technologies like blockchain, cryptocurrencies, AI, and IoT.

“Technology is not about technology, it’s about making the lives of people better, businesses better, more profitable, better jobs, and better, healthier, and more productive people”, she tells Dinis.

She was granted her professorship from the University of South Africa, for her years of dedication and hard work in bridging education, technology, and business. She explains to Dinis that it is her driving passion for technology, and establishing its relevance in business and other fields. She states, “I’m a rogue academic, really, that likes to drag an academic world that is sitting 30-50 years behind the rest of the development of the world and drag it to the table of innovation, and get them to connect with industry”. She is currently associated with the Global Market Acceleration program by La Trobe University in Melbourne, where she is the Adjunct Professor. This industry-led program intends to bring together industry experts worldwide, and facilitate the acceleration of businesses to the international markets.

Halfway through the interview, both experts reached a tipping point when Dinis asked her about her work in Africa and in EdTech, and how she took technology as leverage and made impactful moves in various fields.

“I’m called a design ecosystem thinker. I look at the touchpoints, look to see the weaknesses, and look to see how we can improve those connections. That’s where I see myself as sitting between these two worlds of frontier technologies and businesses.”

With podcast as the medium, she pointedly drew attention to the inconsistencies and disparities amongst the systems around the world. Social, economic, and gender-based inequalities that exist worldwide are her areas of concern that can use technology to bring awareness and sustainability.

Being part of some of the outstanding projects like Social Impact Exchange, Prof. Short has utilised her acumen to benchmark some of the most remarkable principles in making a social impact.  “Work in the humanitarian space is really the driver for me because this is about people, and how we can empower them so that everybody has something- access to resources, to live in a safe environment, etc.”. Prof. Short is applying similar principles while working for the Ukraine Development Impact Bond.

Giving examples of her work for African women in agriculture, she explains that technology can empower women and businesses to achieve some of the most unimagined heights of growth and prosperity. It is her firm belief that it is high time that the technologies that are meant to benefit all must be accessible to all. She emphasises, “We are in such a rapid rate of change now, we are talking about smart cities. It’s so critical at this point that we have level playing fields of conversation. It’s not just about ROI, this is about a world moving forward”.

Dinis was appalled when Prof. Short revealed the disturbing statistics about gender bias in business and entrepreneurship. She emphasised that much of the resources could be redirected by shunning the biases for making a thriving ecosystem for all.

However, she is optimistic about the current situation and spreads a very positive light on the grim situation, “I don’t say we can’t make a change, we can. But, we have to be honest about what we see. We’ve been talking about Smart Cities, it’s a social contract. It’s not about the technologies, because technologies haven’t created that inequity, we have, people have. We can use these technologies to empower us”.

From the Oscars to Mindfulness: Amrita Sen, Singer-Songwriter, Entrepreneur, and Visual Artist

Amrita Sen is probably best known for her performance at the 2009 Academy Awards with music legend AR Rahman, singing “Jai Ho” from the Oscar-winning movie, Slumdog Millionaire. She has also performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Sen is the founder of the Indian-inspired fashion line BollyDoll and an accomplished entrepreneur. She has found composing as an immediate way to connect music to visuals and work in the metaphorical. In her opinion music composition with pictures is very prominent and remains like a combination of music and dialogue. In commercials, the music doesn’t have to be so literal, it just needs to help to represent the emotion of the brand. For composing music, Sen likes to first work out the basics on a harmonium, a type of free-reed pump organ.

Visual artist and musician; Education in music

Sen passed voice and music lessons and was taught classical Indian music and Western opera at a young age. She continued with rigorous training in classical piano, playing the harmonium, and went to India to learn music. In India, Amrita was schooled in the Indian classics from the late Gaan Prakash Ghosh, a celebrated singer, and from her own aunt, the late Geetika Sen. Therefore, she became a composer and performer with a unique sensitivity. She has received degrees from The Wharton School of Business and an MBA from Harvard. Sen’s music has Indian influences but it also has a lot of influences from western classical; because she has trained in piano and western opera. The audience follows her for Indian music but finds her as a very versatile artist. She writes both Indian music and English pop songs. Furthermore, Sen is a well-known entrepreneur, and has launched the successful Amrita Sen line of products including designs from her brands “BollyDoll” and “Cosmic and Eternal Love.” Sen debuted her BollyDoll illustrations at Art Basel in Miami. As a visual artist, she created “BollyDoll”, a live event combining immersive visual worlds with vocal performances spanning East Indian, African and R&B influences. This event of music and art launched an entire fashion and lifestyle brand.

Amrita Sen as a storyteller

As adult colouring books became popular and prevalent, Amrita Sen as a storyteller and visual artist, released an interesting colouring book as a gift collection, called Cosmic and Eternal Love. Sen’s first story BollyDoll” was originally created as a series of illustrations and later evolved into a soundtrack, a live show and eventually a fashion and accessories line that is distributed in department stores worldwide. This amazing book is inspired by the tale of Radha and Krishna from Hindu mythology and contains 15 original compositions. She Chose classic Indian mythology for her newly released colouring book as the idea of a series of illustrations and a girl’s perspective. She is best known for her performance of “Jai Ho” at the 2009 Academy Awards. Sen went on to collaborate with various artists such as Weezer, and Justin Timberlake.  In an interview with Living Out Loud – Los Angeles, she talks about her inspiration behind Cosmic and Eternal Love. At first, she didn’t know much about adult colouring books and the big market for them. Once she decided to start making adult colouring books, she made something, not like other mandala books and have a story behind the pictures. she wanted to have a story from a girl’s perspective because every myth is always from a guy. Sen was involved in numerous projects, so the synchronization of the music and illustrations of Cosmic and Eternal Love took a year to complete.

Amrita’s unique concepts

Wellness, healing and mindfulness are Amrita’s unique concepts in terms of stories from Indian mythology. She tries to present a new attitude about the potential of music to soothe her inner self and does this by taking a representation of the Buddha’s life. Amrita, which is fascinated by the sheer cacophony of pure health and mindfulness concepts, stores excerpts from her books about Buddha and its reports in music and art, and claims that this had been the constant procedure of merging writing with art. Amrita Sen is Originally from India, a designer, singer, manufacturer and entrepreneur who lives in the United States. As a musician, she has tried to combine visual arts with music. As an entrepreneur, she produces original Indian-themed art in a successful line of fashion and home products. Amrita Sen combines the creation of original artistic content with extensive business experience to commercialize unique products at retail. Amrita is a Hollywood-Bollywood crossover producer in the marketplace and has India’s largest vertically integrated studio, Pooja Entertainment. She works as a US-based designer, singer and film producer of Indian-themed products and entertainment for global markets.

Making podcasts

After the success of their previous podcast series “Music For”, Amrita Sen and Dinis Guarda discuss mindfulness, sustained happiness and world peace at “Finding Your Atom” another YouTube podcast series. In episodes of “Finding Your Atom” commits the dynamic boundaries of the most basic principles of humanity are discussed. Finding Your Atom is focused on the primary idea of recognizing unique characteristics, to motivate the audience towards concepts such as mindfulness, sustained happiness, and world peace. The podcast is available on the Amrita Sen YouTube Podcast and Dinis Guarda YouTube channels. Amrita Sen as one of the presenters of this podcast tries to reveal the constantly battling to find success. This podcast shows the heroic journey of negating the cacophony of needless thoughts in life, in order to redirect oneself to find the fundamental ‘particle’ of happiness and peace in life. Amrita and Dinis worked on the journey of meditation and wellbeing with music in this podcast. They discuss the principles and practices for making the world a healthier and happier place. Amrita, as a reservoir of knowledge and deep thoughts, has gained its share of experiences in a rogue path of turmoil. Her strong belief is that the identification of one’s self is half of the way to winning the battle of life.

A US Congress Award and The Human Rights Award winner, Valentina Castellani is a film producer and President and Chairman of Quinn Studios Entertainment. Through Quinn Studies, she is continuing the legacy of legendary actor, Anthony Quinn. In the latest episode of citiesabc podcast, Valentina opens up with Dinis Guarda on her long experience in producing social impact films, her legacy, and what it takes to stand out in the entertainment industry.

Born in a family that was imbued with entertainment, Valentina Castellani found a bond with theatre and arts during her early life in Florence, Italy, watching ballet, classic opera, classical music, concerts, theatres, and plays. Pursuing her interests in designing and fine arts at the master’s level in Paris and New York, Valentina was fascinated by the world of art and creativity. After the painful and untimely demise of her husband, she found her ‘moment’, and created Quinn Studios Entertainment.

“Simple gestures in our life can really bend our destiny, shift our way of thinking, and make us see in a different way. We start making courageous choices and look ahead. So, that’s pretty much how I started production”, she recalls in the early moments of the interview with Dinis Guarda.

Taking Dinis on a journey through the rough patches in her life where she had to make bold and courageous choices, Valentina shares that the driving factor for any film is its content. If the idea and story are convincing, no matter what platform or film festival it is screened at.

“It’s the story that has to carry you, not vice versa. You have to find a way where the story is carrying you, where there is a thread, where you are following. Just like Hensel and Gretel with little white stones in the story, you know. Just like Cinderella with a fairy coming and putting on a dress and knowing that at midnight, the dress is gone, you know. So, in my case, this film is leading me. The story of the film is leading me.”

This thrilled Dinis into asking about what prompted her to screen some of the most unconventional films at the festivals. Valentina says that keeping a good portion of the budget for marketing is a smart choice that many young filmmakers fail to make. Adding to this, she also believes in focussing on the story and screening it on the most appropriate platform. This, according to her, makes a huge difference in marking the success of the creation.

“It is a very important thing to calculate the budget for the marketing campaign right away. And then, we have to have honesty. Is this an Oscar film or a more niche film? Where is it going to win? I mean, when we made The Butterfly’s Dream, we knew that this film could run for an Oscar. So, of course, the campaign was all geared towards that way”, she insists.

Despite being an admirer of films and arts, especially in the theatrical arena, Valentina appreciates the facility that digitised platforms offer, even in difficult times like the pandemic. However, she insists that the filmmakers believe in the story and let it guide the platform to screen it.

“You have a story to tell, where it’s going to go depends on how this story is told. I mean, imagine if Charlie Chaplin was dealing and dwelling on marketing changing and dwelling from ‘Oh, the movies are not silent anymore and stuff’, he had a story to tell with the tools of the moment, and he told the story.” She emphasises that if a story is good, it will create its own market by resonating appropriately with the audience.

Among the top influencers, Dinis is sensitive about creativity and arts making a powerful impact on society. He continues this custom to understand the impact films and creativity make on society as a whole. Valentina beautifully describes the role of digital tools in enhancing the humanitarian touch of creativity and arts. “We cry at the movie theatres, not because of a special effect, but because we feel an emotion that is close to us. Because we recognise a moment, a momentum, an emotion, a state of being”, she clearly explains.

Finally, concluding a marvellous session where the experts discuss everything from politics to leadership, arts, and creativity, Valentina says, “I would like to encourage people to think in a broader way instead of getting entangled with politics and blockages. With Politics and blockages, we don’t create, there is very little we can do. But, with spirit, with courage, with narrative, with creativity, there are millions of ways that can be expressed, created, found, you know, without being irrational.”

Creating Quinn Studios Entertainment

Valentina created Quinn Studios Entertainment in 2012 in the loving memory of her husband, Francesco Quinn, son of Oscar-winning actor, Anthony Quinn. The company was created to establish the Quinn legacy in the field of arts, entertainment, and world peace. ‘Life on a Bike’ was the first documentary series filmed for television. It was based on an Italian pro cycling tour, Giro D’Italia, as an ode to his cyclist husband.

A special film, close to her heart, Valentina filmed this masterpiece after her husband, Francesco Quinn’s untimely death in August 2011. Sharing her filming experience, she says, “It was kind of insane. Being there and doing it that way taught me everything as a producer to just break the barrier of thinking. Find another way, think differently, and get out of the box. So, it was a great conquest, and definitely, it did heal me, and the kids, and it was an inspiring moment in understanding that the power of our imagination is way bigger than the power of pain.”

The production house has some very special names to its credit- ‘The Butterfly’s Dream’ (a candidate for Academy Award and Golden Globe 2014, as Best Foreign Movie. Also winner of 13 International Awards), ‘The Square’ (documentary on the Egyptian conflict, winner of Directors Guild Award 2014, Sundance Film Festival 2014, Berlin Film Festival, Dubai Film Festival), ‘One Rock Three Religions’ (Documentary film about Peace in the Middle East, winner of HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD, The US Congress Award Recognition for the film efforts to create dialogue among Countries, Religions, and Ethnicities, the Jury Grand Prix at the Siena International Film Festival, The People Festival in NY as Best Documentary, The Impact DOCS Award), Augie (on the extraordinary life of Augie Nieto, the Steve Jobs of the Fitness Industry), and ‘Wonderful Losers’ (2019 Academy Awards Candidate Best Foreign Film and winners of 11 International Awards).

Currently, as the CEO and CoFounder of MetaCurio, Jeff is working with global brands and talents who aim to enter the Web 3.0 space. With over two decades’ experience that has evolved from technology to blockchain consulting, Jeff has delivered some fine talents in the NFT and Web 3.0 world. His journey began as getting IP rights for big brands (like The Joe Frasier Estate, Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, and The Wright Brothers). Jeff has successfully launched Mike Tyson, Reactor Motors, and the likes into the NFT space.

“Well, honestly, I really never thought I would be doing what I do today for a living, especially with global celebrities that I grew up watching as a kid. So, it’s kind of a crazy experience, a little surreal”.

Jeff started his career in software development in 1999, right at the beginning of Y2K and global outsourcing. For the next seventeen years, Jeff continued his journey into software, exploring various roles, and finally doing an IPO for GSS Infotech in India. Meanwhile, the changing paradigms in the market created a fascination for him towards the growing popularity of Bitcoin and (utility of) Smart Contracts by Ethereum.

Asked by Dinis Guarda in this latest episode of the citiesabc podcast, Jeff said that this became a turning point in his career and he started travelling to almost every corner of the world speaking about the practical applications of blockchain. He advocated the importance of tokenising projects and advised offerings during the next few years.  Completely caught up in this entire world of cryptocurrency and leveraging tokens as another capital source for projects, Jeff transitioned to equity and venture capital. The skills acquired during that time leveraged his knowledge to understand the fragmented nature of the crypto markets and this prompted him to create a thriving space for content creators.

“I took a different approach than most of my peers. We didn’t invest in technology first, we invested in legal. This was because if you’re familiar with the entertainment industry, every piece of IP or every celebrity or talent has a circle of agents, managers, and lawyers that just circle around their whole ecosystem. So, knowing that, because I had dabbled in entertainment already, I knew that we would have to go through a huge amount of red lines and contract negotiations to acquire IP”, he recalls fondly.

After layering enough IPs with names like Mike Tyson, Dennis Rodman, Wesley Snipes, The Joe Frasier Estate, Odell Beckham Jr, Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, The Wright Brothers, MetaCurio (under Jeff’s leadership), started launching NFTs over the concrete foundations at MetaCurio.

Making MetaCurio a Heavyweight in the NFT and Web3 Space

MetaCurio is a full-service Web 3 strategy company that works with global brands and talents looking to enter the Web 3.0 space for profitable returns. Metacurio is a next-generation creative studio leading brands and talent into the Metaverse. With a vision to create long-term impact over the blockchain and build a true community, MetaCurio helps creators with various solutions like- NFT drops and digital asset development, and epic activations.

Under Jeff’s leadership, the company launched the ‘Mike Tyson Cory Van Lew collaboration’ in August 2021, taking a bold never-before artistic approach for the NFT collection of the celebrity boxer. Within its very first few minutes, the collection was sold out, profiting the company by a million dollars. What was more interesting was that it earned over $15 million in the secondary markets.

“I think it was the mix of the right time, right place. But I also feel like I had a very specific opinion and stuck to it. I think, sometimes, in business, you have to be willing to just do that. You know, having spent a decade in crypto and considering myself part of this community, I really focussed on bringing Mike into this space and kind of in the most organic and authentic way possible”, he explains.

Successful NFT launches and future plans

The impact these NFT sales and creations made on the community as a whole encouraged Jeff to carry on with them. Mike’s next drop- ‘The Laser eyes Derivative’ was sold out in mere twenty-three minutes of its launch, generating another million dollars. Metacurio is currently at the fourth NFT drop for Mike Tyson, a trading card game on Solana ‘Iron Pigeons’; and another one on Binance.

Other clients like Paradigm Sports, Reactor Motors (sold almost 9000 NFTs in the first four days of launch), Terry O’Neill (authentic band group), and Dennis Rodman. Some of the community acts also include a charity drop recently for Ukraine with artists Vladimir Klitschko and Wisby. Considering the nascent appearance of the company over the space (established in 2021), MetaCurio is currently at its tenth drop.

“Now that we’ve established some credibility and some case studies, we’re working to push Web 3.0 forward in the most authentic way possible to expand the community and to help bring brands and talent into the space in a way that doesn’t punish or hurt collectors. That’s my biggest fear”.

With the dream of creating a space that leverages its participants equally, Jeff and his team at Metacurio are dedicated to creating an integrated space developed with the power of smart contracts.

Motivating the young and micro-level creators, he says, “The future of creation in the Web 3.0 economy is the lower-level creators. It’s enabling the people with fewer followers on various platforms to be able to monetise their fanbase in a way that adds value to the total economy”.

A 3-time founder and digital innovation pioneer with 20+ years of experience making digital experiences for humans, including a patent for SEO technology, Dana Todd is a personality not to be missed. Currently the CEO of a global fashion marketplace, Balodana, Todd has been a subject matter expert regarding digital business for trade and national press, conferences, academic and legal engagements. As a former CMO, she employs a blend of digital and traditional marketing methods for integrated strategic planning and execution.

In her words, her personal background is centred around the internet and tech. “My background is deep experience in internet & tech, combined with broad marketing and executive skills. I founded three companies and two nonprofits. I have led company departments, global boards, passionate startups and savvy consultancies, solving challenges for dozens of different businesses. I develop teams and inspire them to grow individually and collectively. My leadership style is fun, transparent and strategic. In between startups, I’ve been a full-time or fractional (interim) Chief Marketing Officer for brands.”

Dana Todd has 20+ years of experience as a founder and businesswoman at the forefront of digital innovation. She is currently the founder and CEO of Balodana, the first only marketplace that is exclusively women’s made to measure fashions from around the world. Dana Todd founded Balodana in fall 2019 after many years in and out of the corporate world and entrepreneurship. Todd said the freedom of entrepreneurship ultimately led her to pursue this startup, which she hoped can give women greater confidence in their appearance and clothing. But the business doesn’t come without challenges. Accessing funding as a woman has been especially difficult, she said.

Creating Equality in Fashion: The Idea for Balodana

The idea for Balodana started when founder Dana Todd found herself frustrated with the retail shopping experience in America. Even at high-end stores, she noticed that garments didn’t fit her body or were made poorly. Boutiques were better, but often had shapeless garments that didn’t feel powerful or stylish. She found this to be a common complaint among her friends of all ages and body types, but it was particularly an issue for mature women and women who wore larger than a size 6.

Likewise, reports emerged about the significant environmental damage being wrought by the fast fashion industry, which creates mountains of overproduction waste and chemical impacts to water and land. Not to mention, the labour practices of the garment industry frequently injure or even kill workers.

Then, Dana found a designer in Romania who manufactured original designs on a made-to-measure basis at a price competitive to most US department store clothing. She was hooked and decided to build a marketplace that connects women with custom clothiers from around the world, in a setting that combines the convenience of Internet shopping but with the high-touch customer service of a posh retail store. She found more great designers and tailors and invited them to help “bring back the dressmaker” for American women. The resulting Balodana company brings together old-fashioned customer service and dressmaking skills, but with the best new technology to help support you better.

Todd is a digital pioneer.  “The press has called me one of the pioneers of the internet marketing industry and I’m primarily recognized for my role evolving the search marketing industry. I hold a patent, rang the bell at NASDAQ, and generally like to think of myself as having at least one finger in tech futurism. I have spoken around the world to thousands of people, and I’m skilled at helping companies achieve success through thought leadership and content strategy aligned to communication and brand objectives. My now-rare “old school” brand training is the foundation of all campaigns; my philosophy is that integration across channels – digital and traditional – is the most critical thing you can do as a marketer.”

As she says during the interview, she aims to make the fashion industry more equal. “So technology is a key, and a significant key, towards solving this problem, the other part is that frankly, there are some just underlying changes that need to be made to the business model itself.

And she added: “I’ll start with the fact of what you mentioned earlier that the people who actually make your clothes are probably the least compensated people in the entire process. It’s astonishing and I’ll tell you what, my personal remedy for fast fashion, every time I’m tempted by a sale price is to understand that any price tag that I see, only 10-15% of that retail price tag went to the factory, who produced it and the tiny, tiny slice of it would be the labour itself. So if you’re buying a ten-dollar t-shirt, a great price, but probably only 50%, 50 cents of that went to a human being who did all the sewing.”

“So the entire incentives of the industry are geared toward inefficiency and ultimately potentially human rights violations, certainly, it’s one of the few legal industries out there that still have human slavery in it. How shocking and how shameful is that, right?”

Creating Relevant Content And Focusing On Health And Wellness – Kewal Kapoor On Dinis Guarda YouTube Podcast Series

Kewal Kapoor interview : With a diverse portfolio of content creation and management background to his bag, Kewal Kapoor has an extensive and deep understanding of various industries. Besides being a founder and creator of the CHAI Kreative & Advisory agency, Kapoor is an assiduous researcher, a proficient writer, investigator, and journalist, an experienced producer and director. His cross-industry and international experience is what makes him an exceptional consultant and creative strategist.

Kewal Kapoor interview

Kewal Kapoor was born in Indore, a small city and the hub of Hindi journalism, in India. After losing his mother at a very tender age, he started accomplishing everything on his own at the age of fourteen. He graduated in Commerce at an evening college and joined as an activist in a democratic rights organisation.

He started by getting involved in a couple of BBC projects, creating many innovative projects. The first one was the human rights show, which was never ever done earlier in the country. Thereafter, he was a part of making a documentary of thirteen-part series for tax laws, made for the Govt. of India, with KPMG.

He was also involved in creating the biggest sports portal for the Commonwealth Games in India.  Creating an encyclopedia of Gandhi, released by PMO is another one of his greatest accomplishments. This was, in those days, trending on Twitter, where the core values of Mahatma Gandhi, non-violence, and peace were the prime areas of focus.

Kewal’s passion for writing is a direct consequence of his love for reading. His initial writings at various college-level competitions helped him fund his education. What started as a profession to support my education, became his passion later, and found him a job at Dainik Hindustan, a daily newspaper.

“Writing from that day till now is something that I have been doing and I do write in about seventeen dailies. Now, I write more on ageing and travelling, but I have written a lot of television scripts, shows, documentaries, and research. So, writing is close to my heart, in the sense, I feel it gave me a company I was looking forward to. A book is still a part of my life. I found most of the answers through the book and when I connected to the people, I felt that there is a bridge between the people and the book. Because I read well, it was very easy for me to connect to that.”

While being a guest speaker at the latest podcast for citiesabc with host Dinis Guarda, Kapoor shared his learnings and experiences in the field of wellness and health, especially for aged persons.

“One of the things I’d like to mention about ageing is that it’s the area I’m very passionately involved in. Also, I’ve not approached that from the point-of-view of not-for-profit, but for social impact business. We brought a change in the Government of India policy.”

Taking the audiences through an enlightening journey of his work on various projects for content creation and writing, Kapoor spins a gripping narrative of how diverse the land of his country is, and how it has nurtured him for years.

Kewal Kapoor interview

Being from a land of diverse cultures and languages

Kewal Kapoor has lived in about 6 different cities in the country- Delhi, Bombay, Varanasi, Ujjain, Gumla, Saiwa. So diverse is the land that the gradience in language appears every 100 yards, and every 200 yards for culture.

Appreciating the diversity in language and culture of the country, he points out that for the expansion of modern technology, there is an urgent need to convert them to regional languages. Citing a convincing example he says, “It’s difficult to get an Artificial Intelligence book in Hindi or in regional languages. The modern technologies, if they have to expand far more, and see more innovation in India should be more in regional languages. The digital is recognising this change. I remember when cricket (game), which is a religion in the country, was on Star TV, the moment it started broadcasting it in regional language on Hotstar, its audience went up by 32%. Hotstar made a large amount of money. So, culturally it’s a diverse nation. It thinks differently, it acts differently, it eats and sleeps in a very different manner. Its festivals are even different. So, those local nuances have to be kept in mind, I feel”.

About being a strategist

After serving as an executive producer at UTV, Kapoor started a company, Televista Vision. It was there that he realised his potential to bring out a working strategy for Lintas, an advertising agency

“They wanted to do something in the government sector, and they were not doing anything substantial. So, I strategized the complete offer of the government for them, which was “Incredible India”, how the government should approach, what the target audience of the government is, and how government communication is different. The way you write a letter to the corporate, and the way you write a letter to the bureaucrat is totally different”, he highlights.

He further adds that strategy differs with every project. With different requirements, targets, and dissemination of choice, manner, and method, the strategy varies in its nature, form, and structure.

His NGO experience

Being an activist from his college days, Kewal was a part of a democratic rights organisation. His serious side of activism involved investigating prison conditions and cases of custodial death, violence, and extra-judicial killing and murder. With the Poddar foundation, he was deeply involved with maintaining mental health for the elderly and children.

“It was actually a foundation that was promoting peace and non-violence. So, the challenge was that the kids were exposed to these gamings. The parents complained that the kids were becoming more and more aggressive and violent. It was a challenge. Peace and Non-violence is not a part of the curriculum, it is not part of our daily life, it is not part of our school or classroom, it is not there. So, when I see a lot of violence across the globe, or when I see a lot of conflicts around the globe, I think, that is one of the reasons where digital can possibly provide a solution that has peace as a value, or part of our curriculum while growing up”, he emphasises.

Mental Health during the digital age

“I can tell you more about this because I interacted with a lot of elder people, who are above 60. I interacted with about 40-45 thousand people, who faced different kinds of mental health challenges. In the capital city of India where I’m sitting 33% of the elders are considered to be in a state of depression. Learning from the Poddar foundation, or my work on ageing or even interactions with a large number of people, I personally feel, about mental health, is that people don’t invest time from childhood till the elder age. People don’t invest time in making relationships. They are making relationships with gadgets, with all that is not a part of human interactions. That becomes a reality of life for them”, he painfully explains.

He insists that it is imperative that we must be honest about expressing ourselves and seeking help for the same. Discussing fear is the first step to counter mental health issues.

About his entrepreneurial plans

Entering the post-COVID era, Kewal is zealous in two specific areas- developing digital content for various online platforms, and playing sports, especially cricket.

“I’m coming out with interesting content that is related to sports. Cricket is a religion and is growing. Cricket is going to be in the US as well. Let’s play, let’s bring the game on, let’s go back and play, and you know it will be valid throughout life. Don’t stop playing”.

Iteration of content for Web 3.0

Kapoor hopes and foresees the opportunities that Web3.0 brings with itself, content creators.

“As far as Metaverse and Web 3.0 go, I personally feel it’s a huge opportunity for the creator to get away from a bigger label, bigger corporation monopolies, and have their own identity. Look together, create locally relevant content which is globally still valid. I see it that way, rather than looking at it in any other way. It is going to democratise and look like more of a pyramid. Its base is going to be far wider”.

However, he does point out the crisis the world is facing in terms of creating the content. He clearly indicates that with changing times, the obsolete content will have to be updated. Catering to the changing needs of the audience and time, the content will have to be given a fresh touch of digitisation.

“You are not producing content for financial literacy, let’s say if you have to produce content for a children’s bedtime story. Because these stories will change because their life has changed. The stories which were relevant in the past are no longer relevant. I see that content is going to be a really exciting area, and I think that’s why it’s getting more and more expensive”.

Concluding his remarks on wellness and mental health, Kewal explains, “Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead at the age of 79. He was perfectly healthy and had never taken medicine in his life. He survived high blood pressure and constipation. The only thing he did was an essential walk. People said he walked so much that it was equivalent to taking a tour out of this earth. He used to walk every day. So, being healthy and happy doesn’t cost a lot of money. It doesn’t cost you a very great gym. It’s just a simple conviction, as goes”.

Chris West is a unique combination of insightful strategic thinker and highly-awarded writer. He is the founder of Verbal Identity, which defines the strategic vision for global brands and startups. From  Alphabet’s ‘moonshot factory’, LVMH, Vauxhall or John Lewis, Chris has perfected the art of language applied to marketing strategies. He regularly contributes to popular magazines and editorial columns with a huge readership, owing to his passion for writing, and deep intuition of language.

With a Science-based background- Human Physiology and Computer Science were his subjects of specialisation while pursuing his degree at esteemed Universities like Cambridge. Chris started in the world of computers, and gradually progressed to the creative realm on finding his ‘Moment of Realisation’.

“I think it was only on the last day of my career that I fully understood what my career really was”, he jokes.

Chris ran a project-based advertising agency for 10 years working with global clients and before that, he was one of London’s most awarded copywriters for his work across the Guardian, Adidas, British Airways and the Conservative Party. In 2016, he was the convening President for the inaugural verbal branding jury at the LIA.

“As much as we want Science in the world, and I strongly believe we need and must listen to science, there’s also some magic as well that can go on. I think when you can weave those two together in business or in language, you’re doing really well”, he shares fondly.

Founding Verbal Identity

He founded Verbal Identity in 2010 to help company and department leaders define the strategic vision for their business and bring it to life with language. His firm has guided global and national brands, relaunches, and start-ups, from B2B and B2C to tech and luxury and everything in between.

Chris is the Founding Partner and CEO of Verbal Identity, a strategic brand consultancy specializing in the power of language. Clients include Alphabet’s ‘moonshot factory’, LVMH, Vauxhall, John Lewis, and start-ups from fintech, data science, and beauty.

“Lots of companies end up looking different, but sounding exactly the same. So, it’s that kind of realisation that made me think, you know what, why shouldn’t business owners, founders, leaders have another lever to pull to shape how their business interacts with their colleagues and shape how their business interacts with the outside world. And for me, that was language, this hugely supremely powerful thing that we all have.”

Verbal Identity is the congregation of super-specialists in linguistics, expert writers, and strategists who use language as a powerful tool in transforming companies inside and out. It is a common think tank that shapes the foundation ideology of the companies with language as their unique edge.

“When we talk to business leaders about verbal identity, it’s very quickly they can see, because it’s intuitive for them. Yeah, I understand how language works now if there’s this really simple framework. So, that’s really how people get into it”.

The firm has been successful in directing more than $1b of investment to their national and international clients.

“All those little cues, all those little hints in people’s personality or in a brand’s personality, they’re all there. And if you can listen to them, and spot them, and question things in the right way, then often what you find is that the leader of the business or whoever is responsible for this tone of voice is very good at startings put together, and we just give them the framework, and we just help them with a few tips and tricks along the way”, Chris explains.

Chris is also a Bestselling Author. He has written two books to date: ‘Strong Language: The Fastest, Smartest, Cheapest Marketing Tool You’re Not Using’ and ‘How Words Work’.

Strong Language: The Fastest, Smartest, Cheapest Marketing Tool You’re Not Using

In Strong Language, international tone of voice expert Chris West walks readers through the process of creating a compelling brand voice – and getting everyone to use it from day one.

“A great brand voice grabs attention, persuades your audience, and builds loyalty.” But as the number of brand channels explodes, organisations are finding it harder than ever to create a consistent, differentiated brand voice and express exactly what they stand for.

In the book, he wants readers to discover the three levels that every brand voice operates on, and learn step-by-step how to create a practical tone of voice guidelines, flex their brand voice for different situations, and get organisational support to create the change they want.

“Discover the three levels that every brand voice operates on and learn step by step on how to create practical tone of voice, guidelines, and look at how to create this change you want.”

Drawing on his experience working with hundreds of brands – including Alphabet’s Moonshot Factory, Harry Winston, the world’s biggest carmaker, and startups in fintech, edtech, and skincare – Chris West’s Strong Language framework tries to guide readers to the breakthrough voice they need to outsmart and outperform competitors.

“My pitch for the book is very straightforward. I think we’re in a world where most people would say they’re are more channels than ever before. So they have to know what to say in each of those channels. Not only that, there are more challenges than ever before. So, whatever size business you are, you can be pretty sure there’s a new business that’s just started in your sector which is going to be aggressive. They’re going to use language because they don’t have money to outspend you, so they outthink you, so they are going to use language. So, there are more channels, more challenges. We’re living in a society where I think consumers quite rightly are saying to brands and businesses what’s your view of this issue. So, we’re in this kind of environment where language has never been more important than before. We say that language is working everywhere all the time, and we’re responsible for all of us in a business for language with a greater velocity than ever before. So, it’s kind of crazy, we don’t have a consistent language, that we can’t look across at someone starting our company, and we can train them.”

How Words Work

How Words Work was initially created as promotional material for the brand strategy consultancy, Verbal Identity, to open the eyes of CEOs and CMOs to the value that smart language can add to their business.

He said about his book: “It was great for my ego that my book hit #1 just 36 hours after launch, but I think the real story here is that an increasing number of business leaders are looking to language as the most underused, yet most powerful, marketing asset that can cut through the noise and win customers, deepen their loyalty and de-position rivals. Just with words”! The book, ‘How Words Work’, was recognised at the 2017 D&AD Awards.

Outside of work, he contributes to The Sunday Times and is a Contributing Editor at a leading UK luxury magazine. He wrote “A Little Worm” which won Best Film at the Barcelona Film Festival.

8. The Pomp Podcast

When we talk about Bitcoin and blockchain podcasts, one of the most loved/hated is The Pomp Podcast. With over 400,000 followers on Twitter, Anthony Pompliano is one of crypto’s big hitters—and with his show The Pomp Podcast (formerly known as Off the Chain), he’s used that influence to bag interviews with big names from the cryptocurrency space and beyond.

Pompliano’s approach is to focus on the impact of blockchain, crypto, and the decentralized web on the financial sector—from investing and fundraising to everyone’s favorite topic, regulations. Between the quality of the guests and the host’s background in crypto investing—he’s a co-founder and partner at Morgan Creek Digital—there are some great insights to be had. A worthwhile, perspective-widening listen for even the most avid Bitcoin enthusiast.

9. The Decrypt Daily

According to Najib Aminy and Stephen Graves, from Forbest: “The Decrypt Daily, is as fine a show as you could hope to listen to. Released, as the name would suggest, every weekday, it sees host Matthew Aaron (formerly of Crypto 101) pore over the day’s news, with insightful interviews featuring crypto luminaries.”

10. What Bitcoin Did

Rising to become one of the most popular crypto podcasts since its launch in 2017, What Bitcoin Did has taken host Peter McCormack to 30 countries as he tracks down and interviews leading figures in the crypto space (though since the coronavirus pandemic kicked in, he’s been confined to the less glamorous surroundings of Bedford).

11. Unchained and Unconfirmed

Laura Shin, host of Unchained, is an independent journalist and (gasp) a “nocoiner”. Unchained has been running since 2016, making it one of the more established podcasts in crypto, and it’s played host to many major names from the space. The likes of Acting Comptroller of the Currency Brian Brooks and SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce have come on the show to share their thoughts on the regulatory environment, while investors such as Chamath Palihapitiya, Mike Novogratz and Raoul Pal discuss economic trends.

12. Bully Esquire

Launched in October 2020, Bully Esquire is a relative newcomer on the scene—but is already off to a strong start. While the format’s a familiar one—a long-form interview podcast, with most episodes clocking in at an hour—the hook here is its host’s background as a corporate attorney. Bringing his legal expertise to the table, he covers topics such as how lawyers are responding to the evolution of crypto regulations, and the impact of crypto privacy on government policy.

World Mental Health Day Businesses Could Face A Mental Health Storm This Winter

Despite relaxed lockdown restrictions, businesses are urged to continue their focus on keeping teams motivated and productive in the face of uncertainty. According to recent data by the ONS, 69% of adults in the UK say that coronavirus is having a negative effect on their life. 63% are worrying about the future, 56% are feeling stressed or anxious and 49% simply felt bored.

With the winter months just around the corner, John Williams, Head of Marketing at Commercial Property Specialists Instant Offices explains why paying attention to employee mental health is most crucial than ever, whether teams are working onsite or remotely.

A YouGov survey has highlighted how the outbreak has impacted the overall mood in the UK, with 48% of Brits feeling stressed and 42% feel frustrated. One in three Britons feels unprepared, with 62% of adults saying they feel anxious or worried. This number is much higher in the younger age group, with 80% of under 25s saying existing mental health issues have gotten worse since the outbreak began.

With some team members working remotely and others off ill, quarantined or self-isolating, it is more important than ever for businesses to retain talent, reduce presenteeism and maintain morale. So what can businesses do to pay attention to their employee’s mental health?

Break the Culture of Silence

There is still a stigma around mental illness that makes employees more likely to suffer in silence than share information with their managers or bosses. Around 82% of employees with a diagnosed mental health condition do not confide in management, and 40% of employees have given a false reason when taking time off for mental health.

Now is an ideal time for leaders within businesses to talk more openly about mental health and create a culture that encourages conversations around these issues. Taking a mental health day or asking for support should never impact an employee’s reputation or how they are perceived.

Keep Socialising With Your Teams

Remote working has its perks, but a lot of people are feeling isolated right now. Office banter is missed most about work since lockdown, with recent study by Vodafone shows 41% say they miss the daily jokes.

Environmental Psychologist & Wellbeing Trainer Lee Chambers says dealing with a lack of social connections during the outbreak is a massive challenge for a lot of people. “In these turbulent times, social connection is vital to our wellbeing. Without the ability to go out and socialise in the way we usually would, we have to be more creative and have more intention in our connection with others during this lockdown scenario. In some ways, the enforcement of rules around movement have caused us to slow down. This actually gives us the chance to connect on a deeper level.”

Lead By Example

With many employees working remotely, managers need to be more conscious of the challenges different households are facing. Encouraging flexibility, self-care and regular check-ins is key to reducing presenteeism and stress, and ensuring employees facing any issues can be identified and supported. Encourage transparent conversations and put action plans in place for team members who need help.

Introduce Team Activity and Training Sessions

With employees using tools like Zoom to connect with the office remotely, now is a great time for businesses to encourage morning catch-ups, remote Friday drinks, yoga sessions or even company training sessions. Encourage team members to take a class they’ve always wanted to try or to attend industry-related Webinars. This is a great way to support employees looking to upskill themselves and stay busy.

More work needs to be done to ensure businesses take care of their most valuable assets – their employees. Encourage employees to self-advocate and seek early intervention before their mental health requires more stringent measures, like having to take stress leave or resign.
