Metaverse also allows the creation of digital assets in the form of Non-Fungible Tokens or NFTs, like we mentioned before. Examples include Sydney-based start-up, Neuno, which has partnered with some of Asia’s biggest games and major luxury fashion houses for their NFT launch. 

This NFT/blockchain-based system makes transactions easier. It makes the payment and exchange of these digital assets transparent while increasing the profit margins for designers and businesses.

NFTs in the metaverse is a perfect fit for fashion and retail as it provides certification and uniqueness to creators. It also helps in establishing the true value and digital ownership of the product.

A myriad of business opportunities

The Metaverse is the virtual representation of a real-life land. This means real estate opportunities too.

These spaces could be rented out for organising events, like the fashion show that took place in Second Life and Decentraland.

DXC is at the forefront of this movement.  They recently hosted their annual sales conference – with 1000 staff, together with customers and motivational speakers – in DXC Virtual World, one of the most advanced business Metaverse environments. The campus is set on an island and contains exposition halls, auditoriums, classrooms, meeting spaces, and even a soccer field, theatre, music venue and a beach.

Participants moved around, visited project stalls, seminars, and keynote speeches, and interacted socially, much as they would in real life, all without leaving home.

Sustainable fashion? The metaverse could make it possible

And the possibilities are huge, the Metaverse can make the fashion industry more accessible, transparent and, more importantly, sustainable. 

According to the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, the fashion industry alone is reported to consume around 215 trillion litres of water per year, while emitting approximately 2-8% of the world’s greenhouse gases. Adding to the concerns, textiles account for an annual discharge of 9% microplastic to the oceans. 

Besides impacting our environment, the global economy has also suffered approximately US$100 billion in capital loss due to the underutilisation of raw materials.

Therefore, when the metaverse facilitates the alterations in our shopping and manufacturing processes with its unique solutions, it is in a way introducing us to a remarkable cultural shift that is more sustainable. Reduced carbon emissions, better shopping experiences, and many other unimagined options: the metaverse presents multi-dimensional benefits that we haven’t even dreamt of yet.

For centuries, fashion has been a language, a social and cultural expression, that has driven humankind towards what is new and what could invigorate our society. It has always defined the way we lived, guarding the forefront of societal changes.

Sharing the key element to being a true leader, he said, “If you can be the leader that recognises the potential lying around when the people are struggling and is able to articulate the challenges to the investment groups and boards at the times when they are also looking to make the decisions, you are doing the right things, you are on the road to success.”

To Dinis’s curiosity as to how he deals with the challenges, Samir had the most pragmatic answer. According to him, no achievement or success comes without lessons learnt. He is a firm believer that ‘There are no failures in life, only lessons learnt.’

“Even if you don’t achieve all the things, you set out to achieve, you will probably achieve so much more if you are ambitious, committed, and showcase the most difficult skill to acquire- patience. If you can draw from difficulties, challenges, and failures, you sharpen yourself, improve your character, and dramatically improve your chances of success.”, he enlightened.

Blocksport: A holistic ecosystem that is one-of-its-kind

As the discussion progressed to more intriguing elements, Dinis congratulated Samir for his achievements in life, especially for his exemplary contribution to his current organisation. Explaining the unique nature of Blocksport, Samir said that it is the only sports tech company in the world that offers a full ecosystem for sporting entities and their fans.

“The fan engagement and the ability to offer fans even better opportunities to engage with their beloved clubs is something that’s been massively overlooked over the past few years, and it’s still today. So, Blocksport has thought of a full ecosystem for all these sporting entities to be able to help them facilitate opportunities in terms of revenue creation, improvement of their sponsorship, activation missions, improvements in fan engagement, and has come up with a very smart thing which is a non-speculative fan token.”, he explained.

He further mentioned to Dinis that the token products offer better utilities and benefits for fans and sporting entities. Also, he added that educating the community is the prime focus of Blocksport. Our partners own all the data, we are purely the facilitator and the enabler for further engagement and new revenue creation, in order to make their business model succeed.”, he elaborated.

Highlighting the achievements of the project, Samir told Dinis that Blocksport has launched token offerings for two of the sporting clubs already, including Partizan BC and Empoli FC. Bulgarian Football Federation and Kaizan Chiefs Football Club, the biggest franchise in South Africa, have also been signed and are in the planning phase of releasing their fan engagement apps and fan token offerings. Taking cultural differences into account, the company is strategically identifying a variety of markets to penetrate worldwide.

Speaking of Blocksport’s plans to bridge blockchain, 4IR, and the metaverse, Samir told Dinis, “Metaverse is something I’m very excited about and something that Blocksport is very keen to develop in partnerships and corporations at other places.”

Concluding an enlightening interview, Samir told Dinis that he is a supporter of the Blue Ocean business strategy, which believes in incorporation and collaboration. “We will only benefit and win if we truly want to incorporate our partners and also competitors. We will not win even if all we care about is the return of investment towards the investment groups or dragon horses of those companies.”, he shared.

Overall, this fixes the core problem of limited functionality in Web 1.0 and the centralised model of Web 2.0.

Dinis affirms that the new Web 3.0 will offer fresh ways to combine the best aspects of the previous eras and enhance them in a decentralised manner.

Referring to his vision of Web 3.0 ecosystem, the existence of digital twin means an individual has two identities- one that exists in the real world (the physical Id), and the other is in the virtual world (or the digital identity, or the avatar).

Tokenization is the process of replacing sensitive data with unique identification symbols that preserve all the essential information about the data without threatening its security. City tokenization is a process where some forms of assets are converted into a token that can be moved, stored, or recorded on a blockchain. This might sound complex but tokenization is turning a meaningful piece of data, such as an account number, into a random string of characters called a token that has no meaningful value if breached. Tokenization, minimize the amount of data that a business need. It has become a popular way to reinforce the security of credit card and e-commerce transactions, for small and medium businesses. At the same time, it minimizes the cost and complexity of compliance with industry standards and government regulations. Tokens act as the reference to the original data, but cannot be used to estimate those values. Because, unlike encryption, tokenization does not use a mathematical process to transform the sensitive information into the token. There is no key, or algorithm, to use to derive the original data for a token. Instead, tokenization uses a database, called a token vault, which stores the relationship between the sensitive value and the token. The real data in the vault is secured, often via encryption. In smart cities tokenization the token value can be used in various applications as a substitute for the real data. When the real data needs to be retrieved, the token is submitted to the vault and the index is used to fetch the real value for use in the authorization process. For the end user, this operation is integrated by the browser or application nearly instantaneously. The advantage of tokens in city tokenization is that there is no mathematical relationship to the real data they represent. Tokenization technology can be used with sensitive data of all kinds, such as bank transactions, medical records, criminal records, loan applications, stock trading and voter registration. To make token more useful, some considerations can also be given to the design of it. For example, the last four digits of a payment card number can be preserved in the token so that the tokenized number can be printed on the customer’s receipt so they can see a reference to their actual credit card number. The printed characters might be all asterisks plus those last four digits. Because of the security purposes in this case, the customer only has a token, not a real card number.

The concept of Token – Smart City Solutions in the payment card industry, tokenization is one means of protecting sensitive card data to fulfill with industry standards and government regulations. Born in a family that was imbued with entertainment, Valentina Castellani found a bond with theatre and arts during her early life in Florence, Italy, watching ballet, classic opera, classical music, concerts, theatres, and plays. Pursuing her interests in designing and fine arts at the master’s level in Paris and New York, Valentina was fascinated by the world of art and creativity. After the painful and untimely demise of her husband, she found her ‘moment’, and created Quinn Studios Entertainment.

“Simple gestures in our life can really bend our destiny, shift our way of thinking, and make us see in a different way. We start making courageous choices and look ahead. So, that’s pretty much how I started production”, she recalls in the early moments of the interview with Dinis Guarda.

Taking Dinis on a journey through the rough patches in her life where she had to make bold and courageous choices, Valentina shares that the driving factor for any film is its content. If the idea and story are convincing, no matter what platform or film festival it is screened at.

“It’s the story that has to carry you, not vice versa. You have to find a way where the story is carrying you, where there is a thread, where you are following. Just like Hensel and Gretel with little white stones in the story, you know. Just like Cinderella with a fairy coming and putting on a dress and knowing that at midnight, the dress is gone, you know. So, in my case, this film is leading me. The story of the film is leading me.”

This thrilled Dinis into asking about what prompted her to screen some of the most unconventional films at the festivals. Valentina says that keeping a good portion of the budget for marketing is a smart choice that many young filmmakers fail to make. Adding to this, she also believes in focussing on the story and screening it on the most appropriate platform. This, according to her, makes a huge difference in marking the success of the creation.

“It is a very important thing to calculate the budget for the marketing campaign right away. And then, we have to have honesty. Is this an Oscar film or a more niche film? Where is it going to win? I mean, when we made The Butterfly’s Dream, we knew that this film could run for an Oscar. So, of course, the campaign was all geared towards that way”, she insists.

Despite being an admirer of films and arts, especially in the theatrical arena, Valentina appreciates the facility that digitised platforms offer, even in difficult times like the pandemic. However, she insists that the filmmakers believe in the story and let it guide the platform to screen it.

“You have a story to tell, where it’s going to go depends on how this story is told. I mean, imagine if Charlie Chaplin was dealing and dwelling on marketing changing and dwelling from ‘Oh, the movies are not silent anymore and stuff’, he had a story to tell with the tools of the moment, and he told the story.” She emphasises that if a story is good, it will create its own market by resonating appropriately with the audience.

Among the top influencers, Dinis is sensitive about creativity and arts making a powerful impact on society. He continues this custom to understand the impact films and creativity make on society as a whole. Valentina beautifully describes the role of digital tools in enhancing the humanitarian touch of creativity and arts. “We cry at the movie theatres, not because of a special effect, but because we feel an emotion that is close to us. Because we recognise a moment, a momentum, an emotion, a state of being”, she clearly explains.

Finally, concluding a marvellous session where the experts discuss everything from politics to leadership, arts, and creativity, Valentina says, “I would like to encourage people to think in a broader way instead of getting entangled with politics and blockages. With Politics and blockages, we don’t create, there is very little we can do. But, with spirit, with courage, with narrative, with creativity, there are millions of ways that can be expressed, created, found, you know, without being irrational.”

Creating Quinn Studios Entertainment

Valentina created Quinn Studios Entertainment in 2012 in the loving memory of her husband, Francesco Quinn, son of Oscar-winning actor, Anthony Quinn. The company was created to establish the Quinn legacy in the field of arts, entertainment, and world peace. ‘Life on a Bike’ was the first documentary series filmed for television. It was based on an Italian pro cycling tour, Giro D’Italia, as an ode to his cyclist husband.

A special film, close to her heart, Valentina filmed this masterpiece after her husband, Francesco Quinn’s untimely death in August 2011. Sharing her filming experience, she says, “It was kind of insane. Being there and doing it that way taught me everything as a producer to just break the barrier of thinking. Find another way, think differently, and get out of the box. So, it was a great conquest, and definitely, it did heal me, and the kids, and it was an inspiring moment in understanding that the power of our imagination is way bigger than the power of pain.”

The production house has some very special names to its credit- ‘The Butterfly’s Dream’ (a candidate for Academy Award and Golden Globe 2014, as Best Foreign Movie. Also winner of 13 International Awards), ‘The Square’ (documentary on the Egyptian conflict, winner of Directors Guild Award 2014, Sundance Film Festival 2014, Berlin Film Festival, Dubai Film Festival), ‘One Rock Three Religions’ (Documentary film about Peace in the Middle East, winner of HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD, The US Congress Award Recognition for the film efforts to create dialogue among Countries, Religions, and Ethnicities, the Jury Grand Prix at the Siena International Film Festival, The People Festival in NY as Best Documentary, The Impact DOCS Award), Augie (on the extraordinary life of Augie Nieto, the Steve Jobs of the Fitness Industry), and ‘Wonderful Losers’ (2019 Academy Awards Candidate Best Foreign Film and winners of 11 International Awards).
