India surpassed Britain to become the world’s fifth largest economy in the final months of 2021. This comes as the London Stock Exchange (LSE) continues to fall down the international ranks, with the nation in the midst of an energy shortage, a brutal living squeeze, and the highest rate of inflation in four decades.

India Overtakes Britain To Become Fifth-largest Economy

India – an economic powerhouse set become the fastest-growing economy by the end of the year – extended their lead in the first quarter of 2022, and is projected to be a fifth larger than the UK by 2027, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

On the last day of Q4 in 2021, India’s economy stood at $854.7bn, whilst the UK’s was at $816bn, marking a significant turn of events compared to a decade ago, when India was ranked 11th among the largest economies, and the UK was fifth. Nayan Gala, founder of JPIN, the largest bilateral investment banking platform across the UK and India, explains why India has experienced such a fast growth, how the country differs from other economies, and how the LSE can maintain their competitive edge in a post-Brexit era.

Dubbed as Asia’s Silicon Valley, India is home to some of the world’s most successful CEOs, who are at the helm of steering global conglomerates such as Alphabet, Microsoft, Twitter, Adobe, FedEx and most recently, Starbucks. The economic powerhouse is already one of the top destinations for investors looking for tech startups and despite global ‘stagflation’, India continues to thrive in development, IT and digital technology. Currently boasting over 100 unicorns, it is producing one every ten days and will be instrumental in supporting the UK’s tech growth in the coming years especially after the Free Trade Agreement is passed.

In comparison, a chairman of the London Stock Exchange (LSE) has recently warned that the UK must act fast in “tearing up decades-old orthodoxies and water down a host of stock market rules” to ensure that London remains a relevant destination for flotations and capital raisings. He added that the capital is no longer the “default” European venue for listings and equity raises, and that the LSE, once flying with the likes of New York, Shanghai, and Tokyo, could diminish to that of a regional exchange if it continues to shrink at the current pace. Although Brexit has presented a vital opportunity for the UK to branch out towards markets outside of Europe, experts have asserted that this should also work alongside the implementation of radical reforms to ensure that London persists as a relevant destination for flotations and capital raisings.

As of June this year, the number of companies trading on the LSE stood at 1,900 – a slight decrease from 1,994 during the same time last year. For context, negotiations regarding Brexit first started in 2016, when the number of listed companies on the LSE reached 2,348 in January that year. London has traditionally been known as the world’s most international stock exchange. In 2020, 25% of the world’s cross-border IPO capital was raised in London, and three of London’s five largest IPOs were international. In comparison, only 13 listings took place in the first six months of this year, raising just shy of $150m – a staggering 71% and 99% decline on the last two years respectively.

Nayan Gala, investment specialist and founder of JPIN, comments on India’s fast-growing economy and how the UK can maintain its competitive edge:

“Despite a few dips in the past two years due to the effects of a pandemic and an ongoing war, India has continued to show signs of real development and record economic growth – which has resulted in a huge leap ahead of Britain.

“This monumental moment clearly illustrates how companies hailing from the country are successfully positioning themselves for the changing landscape in technology. As one of the leading hubs of IT and technology, I expect to see an increasing number of investors turning East in search of the startups that could shape the future of the global economy.

“London has always been an attractive destination for companies looking to go public, with a particular interest from international businesses. The last few years have evidently presented a few challenges – but now, particularly with the opportunities Brexit has provided, there are some outdated aspects of the UK’s stock market regulation that could also be reassessed to present further opportunities. This will likely assist with boosting the stock volume, value and quality, and could result in a significance bounce back of the LSE.”

UK Launches Parliamentary Panel To Bridge Trade And Investment Ties With India

In a step further accelerating the strategic collaboration between the UK and India, a new UK parliamentary panel has been created to promote trade, investment, and citizen ties with India. India (Trade and Investment) All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) was formally registered last week as part of India’s 75th anniversary of independence. The initiative aims to build an inclusive bridge between the two countries while supporting and promoting the India-UK free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations. This is a crucial step in Britain’s post-Brexit era, especially because the country’s skills shortage is likely to cost the economy £30-39 billion a year if no action is taken to source further talent, according to CBI Economics.

Gaurav Singh, founder of the largest bilateral investment banking platform across the two nations, JPIN, explains that the UK and India are fundamentally two pieces of a puzzle that come together to provide mutually beneficial support to one another during a crucial period of economic change in the post-Brexit era. Britain is currently experiencing the worst talent drought on record, which has subsequently stunted business growth across the whole nation.

In tandem, India – dubbed Asia’s Silicon Valley – is home to 25% of the world’s engineers, according to the National Science Foundation. In line with this, the British government’s desire to improve digitalisation and tech expansion will continue to be supported by India’s healthy pool of skilled talent. India’s IT industry currently has over 4.5 million skilled workers and has the potential to achieve up to $350bn in annual revenue by 2025. A partnership between both countries is set to further fortify trade security and is one of the biggest talent-based partnerships to exist globally.

India’s commerce minister, Piyush Goyal, has announced that India is on track to conclude a long-awaited trade agreement with the UK by October. In an agreement that has been hailed by Downing Street as a “centrepiece of Britain’s post-Brexit economic strategy”, Goyal has stated that 11 of the proposed pact’s 26 chapters were already “dusted and ready”, and will look to be finalised in the next few months.

The UK–India investment relationship is already worth £24bn and supports more than half a million jobs across the UK. Now, both players continue to explore the possibility of an interim agreement to provide quick gains that will benefit businesses on both sides. Britain has already made strides in securing a strategic partnership with India, with a primary focus on cyber security, science and education, and the APPG panel will look to further cement both countries’ reliance on each other.

Gaurav Singh, founder of JPIN, explains why India could be the key to lift Britain out of its socio-economic slump:

“India is one of the world’s largest economies and presents huge potential as a key partner for trade and investment for the UK. India is a 21st-century powerhouse and therefore, establishing a solid relationship with the UK in trade, technology and security could be significantly beneficial for both parties. The significance of the relationship between both nations cannot be underestimated.

“Britain has long been a global leader in terms of tech innovation, but it faces one of its toughest challenges currently in terms of a severe skills shortage. In a world where automation and AI are becoming increasingly important, companies need to have access to a large talent pool that can assist in fulfilling these roles.

“It’s great to see the creation of a new APPG panel with Britain and India, which would see a lot more cross-border partnerships between the two countries, creating jobs, fuelling innovation and above all positively contributing to both economies in a big way. It’s clear that closing this trade deal is a top priority for the government, and there appear to be fewer stumbling blocks as we edge closer to the finish line.

“India is goods and resource-wealth, growing exponentially, and will be the centre of the world trade in the coming decades. Therefore, building a trade and investment relationship here is particularly important to allow the UK to benefit from the immense growth India is already experiencing.

“The APPG panel will also look at ways that could help with small businesses in both countries, especially because the levelling-up agenda is such a pressing matter for the UK government. This will look to help future-proof the economy, and it’s fantastic to see that this, alongside the FTA deal, is coming into fruition.”

Mr. Pradeep Multani, President of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in India, is the guest in the latest episode of Dinis Guarda YouTube podcast series. Both of them discuss how to build safe, trusted, and resilient foundations for businesses and commerce in Indian markets, and the boom of the traditional system of medicine. This series is powered by citiesabc.com and openbusinesscouncil.org.

An exceptional personality, Mr. Pradeep Multani is originally from a family of Ayurvedic physicians (also called Vaidya). After successfully studying law at Delhi University, he has journeyed through multiple industries and is currently serving as the President of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI). He has affluent experience of more than 40 years and is also the President of AMAM (Association of Manufacturing of Ayurvedic Medicines) where he is working tirelessly to achieve the ease of doing business and promoting the AYUSH sector.

During the interview, host Dinis Guarda finds out that Mr. Multani is zealous in carrying forward the Prime Minister’s  (of India) vision to transform India’s $2.8 trillion economies to $5 trillion. Mr. Multani firmly believes that at the pace with which India is growing towards globalisation, it is not far from truly becoming a self-reliant country(an Atma Nirbhar Bharat).“Trust in your leadership, trust in your own capacities. Definitely, the way India is headed today, the day is not far when these goals of being self-reliant India.”, he told Dinis.

Beginning the podcast episode by exploring the potential that the Indian traditional system of medicine holds for the world, the two discussed that this system is not well recognised and approved at a global level. “In most of the countries of the world, the Ayush system is not approved as the medical system. So, all these medicines are going as health food supplements (nutraceuticals). Ayush has gone into agreement with WHO, setting up a traditional medical centre in India- the first in the world being in Gujarat, signing MoU with more than 25 countries where they are accepting this system of medicine as an acknowledged and approved system of medicine”, Mr. Multani told Dinis.

PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry: Promoting industry, trade and entrepreneurship

Asked by Dinis about the role of PHDCCI in developing India’s business and commerce, Mr. Pradeep Multani explained that he oversees its decision-making process. Utilising the strong national and international relations that the organisation has built over its 117 years of establishment, PHDCCI has been working at the grass-root level and coming up with effective strategies that align with the nation’s vision and policies. Speaking about the transformation brought about by digitalisation, Mr. Multani tells Dinis:-

“Being the voice of industry and trade, the chamber has been focussing for the past few months on several cohesive strategies for a sustained economic expansion and is advocating a new recommendation to the govt. These transformations are being driven by India’s technological expertise, accelerated adoption of digitalisation, invigorating entrepreneur spirit and disruptive startup culture. The chamber continues to play a proactive role of deliberating policy makers on important issues concerning the economy”.

Throwing light on the future plans of PHDCCI for enhancing the trade and commerce for India, Mr. Multani says that besides servicing their fellow countrymen, PHDCCI is committed to providing an environment of confidence and security to the global investors for shifting their manufacturing capacities to the country. “We will hand-hold them, we will guide them, how to set up their plants, how to get permission, and all. India can be one of the top manufacturing hubs of the world. The PHD chamber will be working as a perpetrator who offers a win-win relationship, and we all contribute significantly to each and everyone’s growth,” he added.

Giving the appropriate impetus to AYUSH- the traditional Indian system of medicine

AYUSH is the acronym for Ayurveda Yoga Unani Siddha Homeopathy. This traditional system of medicine has been prevalent in India for more than 5000 years. However, it rose to popularity during the recent wake of COVID-19, when the world was struggling to revive itself from the mass destruction caused by the pandemic.

Mr. Multani tells Dinis that AYUSH has been focussing on the general well being of a person by healing a person naturally. He said almost all the diseases in the world will find some kind of cure from this system. When Dinis asked him if the Ministry of AYUSH is planning to expand this sphere of influence beyond the boundaries of Indian culture, Mr. Multani says:- “Yoga has been acknowledged globally as a healing therapy. As for the other components of this system of medicine, the Ministry of AYUSH is working on significant ways to provide necessary impetus”.

Maintaining India’s vision of wisdom and pragmatism

Dinis asked Mr. Multani to elaborate India’s strategic policy on welcoming entrepreneurs. “Even during the time of COVID, and now during the sad and unfortunate Russia-Ukraine war, India has played a very sensible and intelligent role. We condemn any killing in the world, because we firmly believe the world is one big family- our blood is the same, our eyes are the same.”, explains Mr. Multani.

Addressing entrepreneurs, he said:- “Come out with your dreams, whatever they are. We can do great things together. We believe that the world is one big family, we can contribute very very constructively to mankind.”

Bringing the solid educational foundations of the country to light, Mr. Multani tells Dinis that India has one of the finest educational institutions in the world. Nevertheless, there is a significant scope for improvement that can be seen with participation from global universities. “Education from universities abroad costs phenomenally. If we tie up with others, we would be able to provide world-class education in an economical way, with no compromise on the quality and skill of the students coming out. The day is not far when we’ll have top global universities to have something that is really state of the art.”, he expressed his optimism.

Concluding this captivating session, Mr. Multani invites entrepreneurs from across the globe, highlighting the seamless facility that Indian markets provide. Through the podcast, he assures the world: “There is a lot of liberalisation, ease of doing business, and it is also our responsibility at PHDCCI to ensure a safe and secure channel for all our global friends.”

From the world of boxing, fitness, and healthcare, Andrew Woods has had a dedicated decade to educating, instructing, and inspiring a community for wellbeing and happiness within.

Andrew started his formal boxing training in the city of Watts, California at the Broadway Boxing Gym as an (ABA) American Boxing Association coach. He was educated in World History & Kinesiology at Cal Polytechnic University Pomona while honing his skills in the field.

“We as the human family have a responsibility to uplift & encourage one another while uprooting the many things that hinder us from achieving success. Finding the core

Andrew highlights the essence of focussing on the ‘core’ that is the centre of any fitness program or regime. It is his utmost belief that realising the centre of every action is ‘self’. He insists that understanding that one’s body, mind, and spirit should be in harmony with the goals and tasks it is assigned with.

“It starts with the basic understanding of ‘What is it that I want, what is it that I treasure, what is it that I reward, and do I have the mental, physical, and spiritual conditioning to keep it?’. That’s the key to strengthening the core”, he emphasises.

The importance of recovery

The human body is programmed to heal itself, provided it is given sufficient time for the same. Andrews explains this with several examples during an hour-long session. He assures that it brings no harm to the velocity of life, and one never misses on to anything on coming to a transient period of recovery.

“If you find yourself hitting the hall, take the time out to rest. Recover. You’ll be surprised what your body can come up with by just not doing anything. It’s okay, doesn’t mean you’re missing out on anything. It doesn’t mean that you’re not doing anything. It’ doesn’t mean that you’re being lazy or procrastinating. It’s just I’m going to use wisdom this time. I’m just going to rest, relax my body. See what my body can come up with just by standing still”, Andrew stresses.

Balancing with ‘moderation’

Andrew has mastered the art of incorporating discipline, consistency, and self-control with fitness and healthcare. With a rough start at the beginning of his fitness journey, he has learnt that it is imperative to avoid extremes. Creating a balance between nutrition, work-out, and adequate rest is an inevitable step in achieving happiness, peace, and physical and mental wellbeing.

“It starts with the basics of having a foundation of what’s important for you and your life. Your health is number one. ‘Where do I start eating, thinking, and living healthy’, that’s the key. And that’s different, based upon every individual”, he insists.

Creating a relationship with the community

The hosts of the podcast and the guest himself were in consensus with the concept of getting involved in a community for wellbeing and happiness. Andrew explained that it is not only the personal level that a healthy lifestyle impacts in a positive way. It is responsible for the peace and betterment of society as a whole.

“I remind everyone, we’re here for one go, and that’s to get better. I don’t know if it’s to get better at being a better individual, a better wife, a better husband, a better family man, a better employee let’s figure out how we can get better as people. However, this journey that I’m going to take you on is a reminder that you’ll be going to have to fight in order to get there. So, if it’s joy, if it’s peace, if it’s a virtue such as self-control or discipline, we all need to support each other in regards to achieving that goal. So, let’s fight for this”.

The episode concluded on a very insightful note as Andrew enlightens “Are you taking care of yourself? Are you eating right? Are you thinking right? Are you loving right? Are you supporting right? Slow down to see where you hit. Don’t be in a rush. I try to encourage people to hone in on that. You got to slow down before you miss your stop. If you slow things down just a little bit, calm down, you’ll be surprised with the kind of revolution experience you’ve had. You’re not going to miss anything by just slowing down”.

Andrew’s achievements also include training amateur fighters as a certified USA Boxing Coach and as a group fitness boxing instructor at the Equinox Fitness Clubs in South Bay, Newport Beach, Westwood, Downtown LA, and Century City. He is also a well-respected speaker & educator for the greater Los Angeles public schools, churches, recreation centres, and community colleges.

“Let’s shrink down. What are you good at, at the most atomic of levels? Once we think about that, it becomes very clear every person has a thing. There are about 7 billion people in the world. It seems less likely that even five of them are identical. It’s impossible. There are billions and billions of stars in the universe, they have their own unique formation identifiers. Then, why is it so hard to believe that every soul in the world, including mine or my mom’s (who is in heaven now), has a unique identifier? I want to challenge everybody: what is your atomic level identifier? What is really the essence where you have something to say? What is it that only you can say? We will have to shrink it to that level”, Amrita explains excitedly.

At the premiering episode of the podcast, Steven Husak, a successful entrepreneur, reveals his journey of exploration of his own ‘Atom’. He gradually unveils the challenges he faced in his business, evolving his strategies over time based on various parameters. He also shares his experiences during the journey and the ways in which he has embraced the digital frameshift in the entire industry.

“Neil Armstrong had some fears when he stepped on the moon, and we are not anything even close to that. That’s it, don’t be afraid to take chances, go with it. Even if nobody trusts you, go with your dream”, he reassuringly reveals in the end.

Dinis Guarda, co-host of the podcast shares, “Looking at the layers of the society, understanding the concept of finding one’s atom is extremely fundamental in comprehending the pace and direction of life, providing it with enough impetus and consequently projecting in the most relevant direction. This is what mindfulness is. This is what the practice of self-awareness and reflection is, as guided by the most pious meditation and yoga practices since centuries. For me, creativity and the love of my dear ones are ‘My Atom’. It drives me to accept and embrace challenges in various ways, and keeps me motivated enough to find ways through every situation”.
