BooksABC, The New Youtube Series By Author And Entrepreneur, founder of citiesabc.com openbusinesscouncil.org Dinis Guarda, Kicks Off With “The Metaverse Handbook” Review

After launching this series with QuHarrison Terry’s ‘The Metaverse Handbook’, he brings ‘Step Into The Metaverse’ by Mark van Rijmenam, a digital speaker, influencer, and author who is widely known in the technology world for his knowledge, insights, and strategies for businesses and future tech. The book focuses on the idea: how the immersive internet will unlock a trillion-dollar social economy. The Foreword is written by Jamie Burke, and is published by Wiley.

According to Dinis: “I think it is a powerful book, because it goes 3600 into the metaverse, and how the metaverse can create new narratives around our society.”

Mark Rijimenam’s vision of the metaverse on ‘Step Into The Metaverse’

‘Step Into The Metaverse’ creates a benchmark for key concepts like open metaverse, hybrid web, open economic system, and the immersive future. The book argues invariably about the paradigms of AR, VR, and XR, the concepts of interoperability, community-driven platforms of sovereignty, and the specialty of computer sciences.

Sharing the views of John Gaeta, creator, innovator, and executive, on the book, Dinis read out: “In ‘Step Into The Metaverse’, Mark van Rijmenam takes a comprehensive view of the converging forces that will fuse and someday become a future paradigm for human growth, prosperity, and existence.”

Dinis also read out the preface of the book, where Mark Rijimenam shares his vision and writes:

“I hope you will enjoy this journey as much as I did while uncovering this magical world where we are only bound by our own creativity. In this book, we will share my vision for the metaverse, what it can become, and how it will change our identity as well as how we play, socialise, shop, and work. If we manage to develop an open metaverse, the trillions of dollars generated will be shared with all creators and creatives.

But beware, there are dangers lurking on the road ahead that we need to think carefully about how to avoid the same mistakes as we did while building Web 2.0 or the social internet. I realise that every chapter of this book can be an entire book by itself as there is so much happening when it comes to the metaverse, and the world is constantly changing. However, I tried to keep it brief while covering as much as possible.”

Dinis highlighted the key points that make the book stand out in its category. Explaining the importance of topics like unbound creativity of creators, exponential enterprise connectivity, the creator economy, digitalisation of the metaverse, the future of the metaverse, and immersive experiences, Dinis said:

“I think it’s better to look at these topics, especially to understand better; of course, the future is what we write about, but it’s really important that we understand these things to leverage our lives.”

Imagine trying something in a simulated space, a Pro-Pilot level of a project, where processes and things can be modeled to scale. Yes, a virtual replica (or a digital twin) holds the capacity to provide unprecedented solutions to the challenges that have long existed in the real world- be it in the field of medicine, manufacturing, mobility, or even smart cities. These are the dynamics within digital twin space that transcends imagination to reality.

Metaverse holds a promise of boundless opportunities for the world to translate ideas and imagination like never before. With effective simulation and digital replication of the real world, Web 3.0 and Metaverse ecosystem provides a unique way of prototyping without needing any physical resources.

While many businesses have already put this technology to practical use, there are still many who are yet to explore the promise it holds, especially the dynamics that exist within this exceptional realm of Digital Twin technology and Omni-Sensing Cloud.

Digital twin and Omni Cloud: Pieces of a jigsaw puzzle in the Metaverse-Web 3.0 ecosystem

An Omni Cloud is a space where a world-class interconnected network and superior data integrate with each other. It blurs the barriers between the various platforms until they merge together to create a seamless interoperable space, called the Metaverse.

A digital twin, on the other hand, is a virtual replication of a physical being, an object, a system, or a process. This space is an opportunity that examines all the variables and optimises a pragmatic and most efficient solution.

Now, each element in this realm is intricately detailed, owing to the volumes of data available through Omni Cloud (or Hybrid Cloud). This allows an accurate operational dynamic, that is it can be duplicated over its entire life cycle, from its creation to its retirement.

“Digital twins are becoming a business imperative, covering the entire life-cycle of an asset or process and forming the foundation for connected products and services. Companies that fail to respond will be left behind.”, Thomas Kaiser, SAP Senior Vice President of IoT.

Creating a Seamless Autonomous Mobility: An Example

Metaverse is a unique way for automotive manufacturers to enhance their design and development functions. Through digital twin technology, companies are able to create a virtual representation of the product and the digital avatar of the driver.

With all the systems simulated and monitored for every single parameter, data is gathered from the interior sensors based on interactions and modifications.

The data collected collaborates to improvements and design innovations that enhance product quality, leading to an absolutely Seamless Autonomous Mobility (SAM).

This increases the scaling efficiency of the operations while reducing the real-time costs of material and design choices. Autonomous mobility is an essential element of smart city design. With the adoption of digital twin technology and the application of Omni Cloud, developers can realise their long-term goal of sustainable and eco-friendly mobility design for the cities.

A Journey from Virtual to Real

Within the next few years, Metaverse promises to evolve- introducing all kinds of new opportunities in the design, development, and indeed reimagining processes across two realms of existence. Nevertheless, it falls to leaders in their respective sectors not to shy away from this revolution. We must embrace the change and seek out the opportunities that could accrue resilience and new revenue streams to the existing business models.

The Metaverse and the new generation of the internet, Web 3.0, are already here. But what exactly is Metaverse? Here’s an infographic that explains all the layered framework of the metaverse: a metaverse that is distinct in architecture and simple in existence.

With a projected market of $800 billion, Metaverse is the next big revolutionary technology that is attracting almost every segment of the business. A metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds that is centred on social connections made by its participants.

Characterised as a simulated digital environment, Metaverse incorporates technology like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain.

All this, and a realm built on the principles of social media creates a sphere that resembles the real world very closely.

Metaverse is this self-contained virtual economy that is powered by digital currencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

“The metaverse is best understood as the shift of computing and interaction from a device in your pocket into a virtual simulation.” – Matthew Ball, author of “The Metaverse”.

Obviously, there is a need to know this immersive virtual space deep down the intrinsic layers of its architecture, to the very core.

With his expertise in digital and technological advancements and creativity, Dinis Guarda, Founder CEO ztudium citiesabc explains Metaverse to be layered. Here, he follows a systematic approach to describe the framework of the technology.

Let’s dig through these layers and find out the very essence of the Metaverse.

Experience (Virtual and Real)

Most people, while thinking of the metaverse, focus on this layer- the experiences of interacting while engaging in digitally-driven landscapes, like shopping, games, NFTs, digital media, NFTs, etc.

Perhaps, the popular culture of gaming best describes the features of this evolution- avatar identities, virtual immersion, storytelling, and other social interactions.

Besides this, volumes of data could be generated through everyday experiences too, like office meetings, gym workouts, cooking, tourism, theatre, holiday, or even classroom sessions could be classified under this layer.

Discovery

The information and data are collected either through inbound or outbound sharing or marketing systems.

Inbound discovery includes platforms that are involved in community content. In other words, the places that hold public information of the likes and recommendations by the users are responsible for the inbound discovery, like the social networking sites, app stores, and even search engines.

Outbound discovery, on the other hand, includes notifications and display ads.

In the metaverse, the real-time presence of the users would generate additional data about their physical and social ‘immersiveness’. For instance, during a virtual tour of a property, the systems track a user’s choices, preferences, and dilemmas.

Spatial Computing

It is the technique that blurs the boundaries between the real physical and the virtual world. In other words, constantly blends the two intersecting spheres by manipulating 3D online spaces into uncanny realism, or augmenting the real world with digital experiences.

Advanced technologies like 3D programs and engines, geospatial mapping, AR/VR, and XR have proved useful for spatial computing. Biometric applications, voice recognition, and even gesture recognition are some of the verticals of IoT gaining traction to leverage spatial computing and make the metaverse look more real.

Decentralisation

The key to a successful metaverse lies in its open, decentralised, and distributes nature. With the momentum that blockchain technology has gathered over the past decade, it seems plausible that open-source platforms, smart contracts, a sovereign digital identity, DeFi protocols, and dealing in NFTs are soon to be a consensual choice of the metaverse.

AI agents, Microservices and Edge Computing are going to be the latest trends.

Human Interface

The human-technology interface is getting more illustrious by the day. VR headsets, AR smart devices, neural networks, smart glasses, and other wearables are enhancements to smartphone devices. These merely enhance the human body with digital capabilities.

Digital Twin Infrastructure

It encompasses all the technology that is capable of enabling, connecting, and empowering digital devices. The ultimate goal is to realise the potential earthed within each layer. Data centers, wireless, cloud computing, and related materials and processes make up the infrastructure for digital twin technology.

The Metaverse is already here

With an explosion of technological advancements over the past few years, we are already experiencing the ingression of the metaverse in our lives. Nevertheless, there is still a lot to be learned and evolved. The basic infrastructure already laid down by the wealth of knowledge from thinkers and the pioneers in the metaverse shines brightly to guide humanity towards better frontiers (that are yet to be explored).

The challenges of cybersecurity in the Web 3.0, NFTs and Metaverse era

NFTs, Metaverse, and Web 3.0 is the recent buzz in the town. Hilton was interested to know if the cybersecurity technologies that are a huge success today are equally (or even more) effective in Web 3.0. Carlos has the perfect answer for that: –

“It’s actually very peer-to-peer in essence. By using NordLayer, everyone is in the local area network. It doesn’t matter where you are. For systems where there is no centralisation, you have a segment that is connected to the internet, to the main net, but at the same time, it is micro-segmented. So, there are only very specific people that are going to be accessing certain central resources, and not all of them.”

He also explained how private gateways by NordLayer are responsible for maintaining a private line of communication between the peer group. Carlos patiently explained to Hilton how NordLayer maintains the level of security, while also maintaining the authenticity of digital avatars and an overall landscape of cybersecurity in the Metaverse.

Drawing an interesting simile, Carlos explained the cybersecurity measures at NordLayer: – “We use military-grade encryption. You can’t actually unencrypt this even by using a good force (unless by quantum computers). If you look at the research, it would take a few billion years to unencrypt these types of connections and put them into a perspective. The universe is younger than the time you will take to unencrypt this type of connection.”

Carlos also told Hilton that to keep abreast with the latest technological advancements and provide cybersecurity to the expanding landscape of technology, NoedLayer is constantly educating its users and the general public through its blog posts and websites.

Concluding the interview, Carlos assured Hilton that the world is going to witness a wider adoption of the latest technologies in the next few years.

“Actually, right now, anyone that has a relatively modern device can use augmented reality. So, it’s going to be a matter of a couple of years, that people are going to start that more. I would say it is already mainstream. You could go to the streets, take out your phone, and scan a QR code, and you will see something pop out in real life. So, it’s already here.”, he clarified.

A life dedicated to cybersecurity and software engineering

Carlos joined NordLayer, a digital security and privacy solutions company, in 2021. His passion overlaps with the company’s mission to help the people to interconnect in a secure and faster way. Serving as an Engineering Manager at the NordLayer, Carlos is responsible for supervising and coordinating the efforts towards updating and deploying their privacy and security solutions.

He explained the company’s contribution to “empowering the user to be responsible for their own cybersecurity” while being at the backend for support and round-the-clock assistance.

In the words of Carlos, “It’s actually easier than it sounds, especially when you are using this type of technology where you are like plug n play install and everything will be working as a system.”

Set up in 2021, the company has its offices all around the globe. The team of developers and experts at NordLayer is always innovating to provide cutting-edge solutions to keep cyberspace as secure and private as possible.

The solutions under the umbrella of NordLayer include:-

• NordVPN – the world’s most trusted online security solution, used by over 15 million of Internet users worldwide.

• NordPass – a password manager that securely stores and helps users organize their passwords by keeping them in one convenient place.

• NordLocker – a file encryption tool that secures sensitive files and folders with zero-knowledge AES-256 encryption.

• NordLayer – network access security that scales with businesses.

• NordWL – An infrastructure, know-how, and tools for businesses who want to build their own VPN products.

• In one of the applications of Web 3.0, the digital world gets immersive by simulating the real world and making it interactive for the users. This is the Metaverse the world is talking about today.

Dinis Guarda Metaverse Infographic: Metaverse Web 3.0 Internet Ecosystem
Dinis Guarda Metaverse Infographic: Metaverse Web 3.0 Internet Ecosystem

With an accelerated rush by global corporations to establish themselves in the latest metaverse technology, the world is (knowingly or unknowingly) welcoming the advent of the Web 3.0 era with open arms. Dinis Guarda, founder and CEO of citiesabc, openbusinesscouncil and ztudium, has been exploring the realm since its inception. Contextualising the concepts in a new infographic, here’s how he explains the evolution of the internet to evolve into what we know as Web 3.0 and how it creates an ecosystem using blockchain technology for carving out the metaverse of our future.

Web 3.0: A decentralised version of the internet

The third generation of the Internet, popularly known as Web 3.0, is in its bare infancy. It is the iteration that shifts the control of the internet from centralized players to its builders and users.

But how does this work?

This control chain is orchestrated with the availability of tokens on the blockchain, a decentralised ledger system for digital transactions.

Does this mean we are ushering into a new era where creators, developers, businesses, and users are alike?

Yes, indeed. This is what we mean by decentralisation, Dinis explains.

According to him, Web 3.0 rose to popularity because of its inherent nature to leverage innovation with ownership. In other words, each participant gets property rights over a piece of the internet using tokens- both fungible and non-fungible (or NFTs).

But, that’s just one aspect of it.

Another distinguishing feature is adding an extra layer of security to the transactions with a feature called smart contracts.

Overall, this fixes the core problem of limited functionality in Web 1.0 and the centralised model of Web 2.0.

Dinis affirms that the new Web 3.0 will offer fresh ways to combine the best aspects of the previous eras and enhance them in a decentralised manner.

Referring to his vision of Web 3.0 ecosystem, the existence of digital twin means an individual has two identities- one that exists in the real world (the physical Id), and the other is in the virtual world (or the digital identity, or the avatar).

Now, how are the two worlds connected, let’s find out what Dinis Guarda thinks of this?

Metaverse: Interactivity between a variety of Web 3.0 applications

The Metaverse, as it stands today, is a variety of web 3.0 applications with various levels of interactivity and adoption. It is an immersive digital space that simulates the real world and focused on social connections among digital twins.

The data, available through technologies like cloud computing and blockchain, is collected and enabled with AI within the Web 3.0 ecosystem. This incentivises the creators and users to manage their personal data as they wish.

In other words, the decentralised nature of Web 3.0 offers better data ownership avenues for the users of the ecosystem.

“We are going through a paradigm shift where ownership transforms itself from the real world to the digital world, the metaverse, that encompasses this promise of ownership.”, says Dinis Guarda (title). According to him, “This is not a new concept. However, with NFTs and the blockchain gaining traction, we are going to see a lot of builders and creators innovating across the multitudes of the digital world.”

The Metaverse Revolution: 10 Industries That Will Change

The digital world, hereafter…

Over time, these multiverses might progress towards complete decentralisation, opening fresh avenues for newer platforms, and outdating the traditional ones. Dinis concludes that while Metaverse and Web 3.0 are still evolving, data interoperability, data ownership, and parallel multiverses are some of the budding fruits in this garden of the digital realm.

In the latest episode of the Finding Your Atom podcast, Valentina Castellani creates a gripping narrative out of her experiences for co-hosts Amrita Sen and Dinis Guarda to throw light on the essence of a crafting process while realising life’s goals.

“Finding Your Atom” is a podcast series with a goal to find the elementary driving energy that blends with empathy and compassion to create a powerful social impact. The series is a brainchild of co-hosts Amrita Sen, artist, designer, and producer, and Dinis Guarda, author, and founder of citiesabc and openbusinesscouncil. Continuing with their ritual of bringing fresh energy to the podcast, they bring Valentina Castellani, (title) to discuss the depths of concepts like modern sainthood and embracing (and overcoming) fear on the path to achieving the goal.

Asked by Amrita about the key drivers that have been responsible for shaping Valentina’s character, she fondly replies that the process of creation is intimate, fragile, and fearsome. But it is these very virtues that paint hope on the canvas of dreams. One should never be afraid to embark on the journey, the first step to the realisation of a goal.

“I do believe that the heart and soul of a storyteller is the fact that you start a journey. Of course, there is some planning, in the sense that you know your goal, you know your arrival. But the journey is never fully planned. It comes to us. Because, if you have your core connected to the final vision, and to your heart, your emotion, your system of being, the journey gets sculpted and crafted day by day. And you have to trust the process.”, she explains.

While the episode grapples the audience with interesting anecdotes shared by Valentina, it did not skip Dinis’ notice that although we live in the most peaceful of times, the world is fighting together with the most difficult situation of pandemics. Valentina assures us that noise is going to be forever, little things would create the things back to salvation.

“Start from the little things, whether it’s the coffee in the morning, a little walk, call your best friend, take a good shower- know that that little thing ignites a better system. And from that little thing, you start again, and be willing to take the time. Pretty much everybody had those days and they can testify that those days were then gone and there were better days.”

Adding further, she says simple gestures help in overcoming the most monstrous of fears. These, Valentina and the hosts, agreed have been the very advanced thoughts that have been prevalent in times immemorial across all the cultures. Features like innate linearity and simplicity are what make their application universal and across the barriers of time.

Emphasising the importance of having a network that not only supports but is also the very reason for keeping one on their path to a goal, Valentina says “As long as the circle is open between the people of a network, that forms the base. And it needs to be respected. If that network is built, and a solid base of openness is created, it will lead to construction, and not the destruction of the project, every chapter of your life.”

Valentina also introduced a unique concept of “Modern Sainthood”. According to her, “I believe that we are all a little bit of a modern saint. We all are human beings, making a million mistakes, but they all have a cause, full of humanity, and have ethics- all human qualities to expand out of ourselves and help others. We do elevate some people, we do inspire them, and we create situations to help others out. Similarly, we surround ourselves with others who protect our vision, elevate us; and in this process, they do carry us”.

With many deeper insights and concepts being discussed in the podcast, the episode promises to take the audience on a journey that is both enduring and interesting.

A US Congress Award and The Human Rights Award winner, Valentina Castellani is a film producer and President and Chairman of Quinn Studios Entertainment. Through Quinn Studies, she is continuing the legacy of legendary actor, Anthony Quinn. In the latest episode of citiesabc podcast, Valentina opens up with Dinis Guarda on her long experience in producing social impact films, her legacy, and what it takes to stand out in the entertainment industry.

Born in a family that was imbued with entertainment, Valentina Castellani found a bond with theatre and arts during her early life in Florence, Italy, watching ballet, classic opera, classical music, concerts, theatres, and plays. Pursuing her interests in designing and fine arts at the master’s level in Paris and New York, Valentina was fascinated by the world of art and creativity. After the painful and untimely demise of her husband, she found her ‘moment’, and created Quinn Studios Entertainment.

“Simple gestures in our life can really bend our destiny, shift our way of thinking, and make us see in a different way. We start making courageous choices and look ahead. So, that’s pretty much how I started production”, she recalls in the early moments of the interview with Dinis Guarda.

Taking Dinis on a journey through the rough patches in her life where she had to make bold and courageous choices, Valentina shares that the driving factor for any film is its content. If the idea and story are convincing, no matter what platform or film festival it is screened at.

“It’s the story that has to carry you, not vice versa. You have to find a way where the story is carrying you, where there is a thread, where you are following. Just like Hensel and Gretel with little white stones in the story, you know. Just like Cinderella with a fairy coming and putting on a dress and knowing that at midnight, the dress is gone, you know. So, in my case, this film is leading me. The story of the film is leading me.”

This thrilled Dinis into asking about what prompted her to screen some of the most unconventional films at the festivals. Valentina says that keeping a good portion of the budget for marketing is a smart choice that many young filmmakers fail to make. Adding to this, she also believes in focussing on the story and screening it on the most appropriate platform. This, according to her, makes a huge difference in marking the success of the creation.

“It is a very important thing to calculate the budget for the marketing campaign right away. And then, we have to have honesty. Is this an Oscar film or a more niche film? Where is it going to win? I mean, when we made The Butterfly’s Dream, we knew that this film could run for an Oscar. So, of course, the campaign was all geared towards that way”, she insists.

Despite being an admirer of films and arts, especially in the theatrical arena, Valentina appreciates the facility that digitised platforms offer, even in difficult times like the pandemic. However, she insists that the filmmakers believe in the story and let it guide the platform to screen it.

“You have a story to tell, where it’s going to go depends on how this story is told. I mean, imagine if Charlie Chaplin was dealing and dwelling on marketing changing and dwelling from ‘Oh, the movies are not silent anymore and stuff’, he had a story to tell with the tools of the moment, and he told the story.” She emphasises that if a story is good, it will create its own market by resonating appropriately with the audience.

Among the top influencers, Dinis is sensitive about creativity and arts making a powerful impact on society. He continues this custom to understand the impact films and creativity make on society as a whole. Valentina beautifully describes the role of digital tools in enhancing the humanitarian touch of creativity and arts. “We cry at the movie theatres, not because of a special effect, but because we feel an emotion that is close to us. Because we recognise a moment, a momentum, an emotion, a state of being”, she clearly explains.

Finally, concluding a marvellous session where the experts discuss everything from politics to leadership, arts, and creativity, Valentina says, “I would like to encourage people to think in a broader way instead of getting entangled with politics and blockages. With Politics and blockages, we don’t create, there is very little we can do. But, with spirit, with courage, with narrative, with creativity, there are millions of ways that can be expressed, created, found, you know, without being irrational.”

Creating Quinn Studios Entertainment

Valentina created Quinn Studios Entertainment in 2012 in the loving memory of her husband, Francesco Quinn, son of Oscar-winning actor, Anthony Quinn. The company was created to establish the Quinn legacy in the field of arts, entertainment, and world peace. ‘Life on a Bike’ was the first documentary series filmed for television. It was based on an Italian pro cycling tour, Giro D’Italia, as an ode to his cyclist husband.

A special film, close to her heart, Valentina filmed this masterpiece after her husband, Francesco Quinn’s untimely death in August 2011. Sharing her filming experience, she says, “It was kind of insane. Being there and doing it that way taught me everything as a producer to just break the barrier of thinking. Find another way, think differently, and get out of the box. So, it was a great conquest, and definitely, it did heal me, and the kids, and it was an inspiring moment in understanding that the power of our imagination is way bigger than the power of pain.”

The production house has some very special names to its credit- ‘The Butterfly’s Dream’ (a candidate for Academy Award and Golden Globe 2014, as Best Foreign Movie. Also winner of 13 International Awards), ‘The Square’ (documentary on the Egyptian conflict, winner of Directors Guild Award 2014, Sundance Film Festival 2014, Berlin Film Festival, Dubai Film Festival), ‘One Rock Three Religions’ (Documentary film about Peace in the Middle East, winner of HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD, The US Congress Award Recognition for the film efforts to create dialogue among Countries, Religions, and Ethnicities, the Jury Grand Prix at the Siena International Film Festival, The People Festival in NY as Best Documentary, The Impact DOCS Award), Augie (on the extraordinary life of Augie Nieto, the Steve Jobs of the Fitness Industry), and ‘Wonderful Losers’ (2019 Academy Awards Candidate Best Foreign Film and winners of 11 International Awards).

Minting is the process of encapsulating a digital asset into a blockchain as a public ledger, i.e., as an NFT. It is a straightforward process that everyone can learn about, and eventually, put into practice.

This is an extract of the upcoming ‘Metaverse NFTs Uprising Ultimate Guide to NFTs’ By Dinis Guarda.

Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, are virtual representations of real-world assets. Early examples of NFTs are more than just the media soundbites around NFT trading, art speculation, or NBA sports collectives. There is something deeper, transformative, and radical going on. NFTs open the floodgates to new possibilities of creating, storing, selling, buying, and collecting value. So how do these tokens work in practice? First, if you want to create an NFT, you will have to “mint” it first. This piece explains the process of minting in an accessible, easy to understand way. Promoting it is another piece of the puzzle. Let’s demystify it.

What is Minting?

Minting NFTs - An Extract From The Ultimate Guide to NFTs
Minting NFTs – An Extract From The Ultimate Guide to NFTs

Minting is the process of encapsulating a digital asset into a blockchain as a public ledger, i.e., as an NFT.  NFTs ensure authentic representation for your digital work whilst at the same time also ensuring that it can be flexibly traded or purchased in the market.

When you “mint” a file, you turn it into a part of the blockchain.  Minted NFTs are unique and cannot be replaced, edited, tampered with, or substituted with any other tokens (even by the owner!).

Minting guarantees the originality of NFTs and ensures that the items can be traded or purchased in the NFT market without issue.  This process also enables users to track the ownership and resale in the future.

Once an NFT is minted, the tokenised information is stored on its blockchain until the blockchain ceases to exist.

How to Mint an NFT

There are multiple ways to mint an NFT; some are more complicated than others.  The easiest way to mint an NFT (‘lazy minting’) is using the minting feature provided by NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea and Rarible.

In general, one would only use a more complex method of minting using features not supported within the marketplace or if developing a bespoke blockchain implementation, which would require specialist technical knowledge.

On most platforms, minting isn’t free.  Executing a contract on the Ethereum blockchain platform (and others) incurs a ‘gas fee’ and a service fee, so make sure your e-wallet is in funds.

Most minting functions work in the same way.

In general, you will simply need to select the “Create” option, which will ask you to upload a file (your creation) and provide additional information, including the file name and write a brief description of the work and possibly a description also of terms of use.

Once the details are complete and finalised, you will likely be redirected to a preview page to show how your new NFT will appear on the website.

Marketing your Creation Once Minted

The process above makes your shiny new NFT available for purchase; however, as with all products, it needs marketing to get the best return on your NFT so that it is visible and attractive to the broadest pool of likely buyers.

Although anyone can create an NFT, this does not mean it is easy to make money selling NFTs.  It can be challenging.  Many NFTs either never trade or sell for extremely low values.  There are two main reasons for this: the work has no market appeal or has not been adequately promoted.

To the first point, for an NFT to have value, the media needs to have some sort of significance.  The value of the most sought after NFTs derives from the artist’s reputation or the historical importance of the asset.

The second, however great the artist and their creation, their uniqueness is not the only factor.  Most creators and their work benefit from some form of promotion.  Planning this out is key to optimising financial return. Effective promotion is vital in all cases, which may seem obvious; however, many creators do not have a marketing perspective and finish with minting the NFT.  Promotion is essential for making money and developing a reputation.

In conclusion, minting and using NFTs is relatively straightforward and requires relatively little expertise.  Most marketplaces provide functionality enabling non-technical users to create, sell and buy NFTs easily and quickly. So mint away and market your creations as well as possible!

Ultimate Guide To NFTs: How to build an NFT Ecosystem?

NFTs are the key that brings offline world assets to the online, open, and decentralised digital world, fuelling the rise of new digital immersive ecosystems.

This is an extract of the upcoming ‘Metaverse NFTs Uprising Ultimate Guide to NFTs’ By Dinis Guarda.

NFTs are the future. Just recently, the famous whistleblower Edward Snowden used the technology to auction a piece called “Stay Free”:

“We’re very excited to use the proceeds of this auction to help further our work developing and improving technology that can protect journalists and their sources, like SecureDrop, our open-source whistleblower submission system”.

Ownership and trade are vital aspects of prevalent human culture.  However, human concepts of, and our need for, ownership extend far beyond the practical necessities of food, land, resources, and energy.  Throughout history, our most prized possessions have often been things with no direct useful or economic purpose.  We have created and destroyed, fought over, won, and lost, items of emotional and cultural currency such as religious icons, jewellery, and art that represent the less tangible of our being. Things that manifest the unmanifest codify our ideas and encapsulate our humanity.

Since our earliest history, we have found ways to control the exchange of physical value.  More recently, we have also devised and defended systems, such as trademarks and patents, that ascribe ownership and prevent the unauthorised use of intellectual property, intangible assets such as ideas, patterns, designs, and processes, which may have economic and cultural value.

These assets will become increasingly digital as we digitise our lives and culture in what is being called the Metaverse.

Since the advent of the Internet, we have increasingly codified the intangible aspects of our culture electronically in digital media, relying less and less on real-world physical objects. Adoption cryptocurrency is a critical stage in this transition, enabling an exchange of value.  NFTs provide the next step, enabling a unique description of a discrete entity.

NFTs – the definition

A non-fungible token is a unique and non-interchangeable unit of data stored on a digital ledger (Blockchain).  Although NFTs use the same blockchain technology as cryptocurrencies, what distinguishes them is their lack of interchangeability (fungibility).  Each NFT has a unique blockchain address. This characteristic enables NFTs to act as a digital twin for any unique digital or physical asset to provide public proof of ownership.

The world economy has been evolving toward increased digitisation, creating digital twins of everything around us. A digital twin is simply a digital representation, a unique identity, of whatever exists.  However, we did not have a way to certify and monetise our digital world as we did with paper technology until recently.

NFTs provide an essential building block for the creation of the Metaverse. They offer a ubiquitous means to securely share ownership, access, and use of a unique set of data. As such, NFTs are then a key enabler of digital transformation and a much-needed invention, enabling us, for the first time, to certify an ever-expanding digital ecosystem on which we are increasingly dependent.

The breadth of NFTs is just beginning to be shown and more developments are taking place as we write this book. The market for NFTs is also expanding. It surged to new highs in the second quarter of 2021, with $2.5 billion in sales so far this year (the NFT wave became serious in 2020), up from just $13.7 million in the first half of 2020, according to marketplace data. Moreover, as Visa bought a $150k NFT, Opensea surpassed $1bn in turnover for August 2021 alone.

NFT uses – examples

• Automotive, Aerospace and Maritime Industries – Virtual Planes, Trains and Automobiles

As with land and buildings, virtual cars, planes, and boats have also been created and tokenised as NFTs.

CryptoMotors, are a professional car design studio based in Germany dedicated to creating de-centralised digital vehicles using the Ethereum blockchain.  Every car they make is unique and 100% owned by the token owner.  It cannot be destroyed, replicated, or taken away.

The idea of a custom-made car usable in virtual worlds is an enticing one, and together with F1 Delta Time and Battle Racers, Cryptomotors have sold hundreds of ETH worth of digital cars.

It is not just cars that have become popular.  CryptoYachts are one of several companies that also produce virtual boats, an item with an elite appeal.

In December 2021, a digital mega-yacht sold for 149 ether (about $650,000), making it the most expensive NFT sold in Sandbox’s virtual world.  The ‘Metaflower Super Mega Yacht comes with two helipads, a dancefloor, hot tubs, and a DJ booth among the three-story boat’s amenities.

• Collectables

Cryptokitties, CryptoPunks, Blockchain Cuties, and Avastars are all examples of tradable NFT collectables.

Some CryptoPunks have sold for more than $1 million.

The concept of ownership and the desire to have something iconic seem alive and well.

Exclusive ownership is a concept that appeals to human nature and applies across many sectors, such as fashion, luxury goods, which will be explored further in subsequent chapters.

• Sports

One very recognisable area where NFTs have been adopted is the sports sector, specifically in connection with sports collectables, which can be either physical or virtual.

Digital media vastly expands the possibilities for owning sports content and memorabilia, enabling ownership of unique stills, video, and audio content, such as scoring a goal, with additional content such as commentary provided by the player/s involved.

Sports organisations such as NBA have been quick to replicate other implementations of virtual collectables.

A prime example is NBA Top Shot NFTs which offer basketball fans the opportunity to buy and sell NFT collectables of moments in the NBA league’s history.  Developed in collaboration between the NBA players and several notable entrepreneurs, these have been hugely popular and achieved over $100 million in sales volume.

These NBA NFTs are not just collectables; they have a utility value in being usable in multiple games.  A whole ecosystem of sports games is being built around these NFTs.

Conclusion

We have seen that already many industry sectors have found valuable ways to use blockchain, cryptocurrency, tokens and NFTs.

NFTs have been adopted in multiple industries, and their use is now widespread and popular.   With so many use cases, without doubt, NFTs disrupt and revolutionise most, if not all sectors, not just the creative industries, or even just business; they have the potential for application in all areas of the economy and society at large.

It is not just about doing the same things differently, NFTs enable new and hitherto unimagined transactions. The future is exciting.
