What Philosophy Can Teach You About Being a Better Leader

More and more people feel alienated from the businesses they work for. Traditional management practices are rooted in economics and psychology. The business world has lost sight of the important lessons from moral philosophy and this has led to a focus on numbers and productivity rather than the people who make those numbers happen. As a result, trust in leaders and organizations is at an all-time low and many people feel unhappy and disillusioned at work.

What Philosophy Can Teach You About Being a Better Leader argues that the leaders who will succeed in the uncertain and complex world of work, are the ones focusing on their workforce and valuing its members as people, rather than just cogs within the machine.

The four business experts and authors of this important new book argue that the rise of the ‘omnipotent leader’, who focuses on telling rather than leading, risks creating a generation of feudal CEOs and needs to be resisted. They show how leaders need to learn from philosophy about the importance of asking the right questions. They consider the main issues plaguing today’s leaders such as what a “good” leader really is, through the eyes of the greatest philosophers.

Why this book matters:

  • Modern management practices aren’t working. Workers are disengaged, frustrated and feeling unvalued in traditional company structures
  • 15.4 million working days are lost a year due to work-related stress, depression and anxiety according to the Health and Safety Executive
  • Workload pressures and a lack of managerial support were the main work factors cited as causing work related stress, depression or anxiety
  • For decades work has become dehumanised, with employees treated as tools or assets rather than people. A result of business leaders placing economics, management theory and organizational psychology centre stage
  • In their new book What Philosophy can teach you about being a better leader – four thought leaders from the UK’s top Business schools examine what has gone wrong and show how thinking from Socrates, Aristotle, Kant and Nietzsche can restore humanity to the workplace and help leaders build thriving, profitable and successful businesses

With the help of Aristotle, Socrates, Kant and Nietzsche, as well as a whole host of other brilliant minds, they turn traditional management practices on their head, showing how traditional attempts to ‘engage’ employees such as the ‘town hall’ and other top down communications efforts are doomed to fail.

Instead they draw lessons from philosophy on what it means to be human, and about finding fulfilment and living a good life. Showing how moving away from traditional, hierarchical, risk focused control structures can lead to improved employee engagement, increased productivity and better outcomes for the entire business.

The Hunt For ‘Business Book Of The Year’ Begins

After the unmitigated success of last year’s event, the Business Book Awards are back for their third year – and set to unearth and champion the game-changing books that need to be on every business leader, entrepreneur and visionary’s bookshelf.

2019 saw the awards paving the way to success for female business book authors – tackling the worrying trend that only half as many female as male entrepreneurs publish business books. Creating a women’s category and encouraging more female entrants drew huge success – with women winning awards in 4 out of the 9 categories.

2020 will see the awards champion business authors from diverse backgrounds – with a dedicated category for ‘An Exceptional Book That Promotes Diversity’. The categories also include: Start-Up Inspiration; Sales & Marketing; HR & Management; Sustainable Change; Leadership for the Future; Business Self-Development; Personal Development & Wellbeing; Short Business Book; Specialist Business Book; International Business Book; and Best Business Book of the Year.

The awards reflect the changing face of the publishing industry – and are open not only to books published through traditional routes but also self-published books. The only business book awards to do so.

The shortlist will be announced on 15th January 2020 at an exclusive drinks reception at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in Paddington. The awards dinner will be held on 23rd March 2020 in London. Last year’s event was a sell-out, attracting 250 of the most influential figures in business and publishing. Entries close on 31st December and full details of how to enter can be found here.

2019’s Inspirational Winners

2019’s winners include: Dr Pippa Malmgren, economic and political trend advisor to governments across the globe; No.1 New York Times bestselling author Robert Greene; Chris Lewis, founder of LEWIS – one of the world’s largest communications agencies; leading performance psychologist Fiona Murden; and inventor and world-leading strategist Jonathan MacDonald.

2020’s Prestigious Judges

The awards are judged by some of the finest minds in business, journalism and publishing.

Head Judge Alison Jones has worked for over 25 years with leading companies, from Chambers and Oxford University Press to Palgrave Macmillan, where she was Director of Innovation Strategy.

Each category is overseen by a panel of 3-4 experts, including leading figures from the world of publishing, management consultancy, journalism, PR, business coaching and higher education.

Awards Founder Lucy McCarraher said: “The Business Book Awards aim to capture the diversity of authors publishing brilliant business books in the UK and internationally. They offer industry-wide recognition to new and established authors. At the Business Book Awards, we welcome every good book and all methods of publication. I want to recognise business book writing in all its forms and bring the top authors of this valuable genre to public recognition.”

“The awards allow all authors who enter, are short-listed or win to publicise and sell more books; and shortlisted and winning authors to gain recognition and more business. The Awards instil aspiration in entrants and pride in winners; and the ongoing process inspires other budding writers to come forward and publish their work,” Lucy McCarraher concluded.

Women Triumph At Business Book Awards 2019

At a glittering awards ceremony on the evening of 26th March, the business world’s top thought-leaders and authors gathered with many of the UK’s leading publishers and journalists to celebrate the power, diversity and cutting-edge ideas of the UK’s business books. In this year’s edition, women have been the great protagonists as 4 out of 9 awards have gone to books written by women.

From a shortlist of 48 books, the judges have chosen the most impressive titles of the year –  outstanding for their ingenuity, insightfulness and highly practical approaches – in each of the 9 categories. The 9 categories were whittled down to the overall winner of the prestigious Business Book of the Year 2019 – The Leadership Lab by Chris Lewis & Pippa Malmgren. From the shortlist, the judges also picked the winner of the Exceptional Book by a Woman Award – Power Property Investing For Women by Bindar Dosanjh.

Winner of Exceptional Book by a Woman, for her book Power Property Investing For Women, Bindar Dosanjh said: “I’m absolutely gobsmacked I’ve won this category. I hope this will inspire many many women to take control of their financial destiny and not rely on anyone else. I think it’s great there’s a book award for women…it’s brilliant for women to be recognised because they have such exceptional stories and insights to share.”

After an inspiring speech from the winner of Business Book of the Year 2018 Campbell MacPherson and an opportunity for the attendees to network and discuss the shortlist over a sumptuous dinner, an air of anticipation came over the room and the audience settled in their seats to hear who had won a coveted Business Book Award 2019. Each award was presented by a leading figure in the world of business books.

  • Figures show that women’s books are priced lower than men’s books
  • Books by women are reviewed less often than books by men

The Business Book Awards, now in their second year, have been commended for their work to encourage women entrants and champion women writers of business books. The awards are determined to help inspire more women to write business books.
